We are entering a phase where we could or should be receiving our first frost of the season as low temps start to drop at night with clear skies. There is a chance of frost tonight in the central Michigan area in low lying spots and valleys where the temps may drop into the upper 30s.
Most of the week we will see very little precip or active weather for that matter. Temps will be slightly above normal through Friday in the mid 60s to near 70 by Friday before the bottom drops out on Saturday. Average highs are in the low to mid 60s with lows in the low to mid 40s.
Below is the current snow map from NOAA, yes it is starting to build a snow pack in Siberia, northern Canada and the Rockies. The snow pack in these areas tend to effect our weather as we get into late November.
I had no idea we were going to get that cold tonight. I am hoping my tomato plants make it. I usually don’t get rid of the plants till around the 1st of November. My husband will cut back all our geraniums and keep them over winter and in the Spring start sunning them in the sun (in the garage) and come Summer he will have beautiful plants that are full of blooms. This year I am going to try doing that with my hanging basket.
50* degrees out at thee YARDofBRICKS NE of GR temps are falling fast …INDY
All our windows are closed the heat will be turned on for the first time of the Fall season tonight ..Love it!! INDY
Can’t ask for a much nicer October day than today.
Really green here. I suspect all the rain and warm weather has something to do with that.
Frost Advisory for lower Michigan tonight Love it turn the heat up…. INDY

A warm September, a warm start to October, and fall colors are once again behind schedule! According to WOOD, most of Michigan is a full two weeks behind where they should be right now.
Take a ride around they are beautiful … especially in northern Kent county you are missing out the cool nights and all the rain have the leafs looking and smelling good this Fall…INDY
I am not sure where WOOD get their fall color reports from but here is the latest that I have.

Wow it’s hard to believe we are even behind last year (which was also late). The best pictures of peak foliage I have from last year are from after Halloween.
On a side note my main “go to” site for historical data is down for what the NWS claims is budget issues. At this time, they claim it is only temporary but we will see. Lets hope that the funding for the NWS is not cut down too bad as I would not like to have to depend on Accweather or Weather Bell for out weather information and past weather history. (note most of the forecast from private weather sites comes from the NWS information)

This morning is a good example of how on clear calm nights the temperature can depend a lot on location. I have two sensors that I use. They are both 5’ off the ground and protected from the sun as best as I can provide (that affects daytime temperatures more than night time). Anyway I have one spot in my yard that generally reads colder then the other. (And yes I have swapped sensors to make sure that it was not the sensor reading differently). OK the official low at GRR this morning looks to be 50° but here at my yard the “warm” location had a low of 44.4° and the “cold” location had a low of 43.1° We will see how the low tomorrow morning goes.

Next weekend central lower Michigan may see there first snow flakes of the season pretty good storm system going to move over the great lks it’s getting that time of year …..Have a good Monday INDY
I would not get too excited about the prospects of snow next weekend here in Michigan. At this time it looks like a cool down for a few days. And a chance of just below average temperatures for about 2 weeks mid month and maybe a warm up towards the end of the month.

I would happily welcome a warmup around Halloween… and then we can begin the winter action.
Looking at that map it seems Canada does not have much snow yet other than the extreme Northern tip which always has snow. The Rockies had a lot of snow in late July yet when we were there, I don’t think all of it ever melted.
I know the general thinking is that if there is a large snow pack in Siberia and northern Canada that there should be a good source for cold air. You see that statement every year about this time. Of course you need a driver to bring that cold air in and you do not know the timing of that driver it could be November or it could come in April. Also of note in looking at the above map we do not now how much snow cover there is. We shall see.
