The Sweet, Sweet Summertime

We are now into the sweet summertime. Summer is by far my favorite time of the year with long sunny days and warm (sometimes hot) temperatures.

At Grand Rapids the new 30 year mean meteorological summer temperature is 70.1. Daily H/L start out at 75.3/54.1 on June 1st reaching a peak of 83.4/62.7 on July 15th and down to 78.8/58.6 on August 31st as for the new 15 year averages the 3 month mean is 71.3° with daily average H/L of 76.2/55.0 on June 1st peaking at 84.3/63.6 on July 15th and down to 793/58.8 by August 31st

The warmest summer at Grand Rapids was in 1921 with a meteorological summer mean of 74.6. in 2nd place is 2012 with a mean of 73.6 in 3rd and 4th  is 1901 and 1933 with a mean of 73.3 in 5th place is the summer of 1919 with a mean of 73.2. On average there are only 11 days that reach 90 or better. The most is 36 in 1988 (for June, July and August) with 33 reported in 1894 and there were 30 in 2012. There were no days of 90 or better in 2014 and 1951. Last year there were 16 days.

The coldest meteorological summer was in 1991 with a mean of 65.5 in 2nd place is the summer of 1915 with a mean of 65.9. in 3rd place is the summer of 1945 with a mean of 66.7. in 4th place is the meteorological summer of 1958 with a mean of 67.1 and in 5th place is the summer of 2009 with a mean of 67.9. Last year the mean was 72.4.

The record meteorological summer high is 108 set on July 13th 1936. The 2nd hottest day was on July 12th 1936 and in 3rd place is 104 on July 21st 1934 and on July 6th 2012 (I had a high of 108 on that date) The record low in meteorological summer was a cold 32 on June 4th 1945.

The wettest meteorological summer is 22.63” in 1996 and the driest is 3.62” in 1930. Last year Grand Rapids had 10.19” the new 30 year average is 11.35” and the new 15 year average is 11.49”.

Here is some information on summers past and a look at the upcoming summer from the NWS office out of Detroit.

Of note so far this year only 8.56” of rain and melted snow has fallen so far. And this past spring season only 5.34” of rain fell. At Lansing it is even less with just 7.34 for the year so far and only 4.38 fell this past spring season. And to top it all off there has been almost a complete lack of thunder with just 4 reports of thunder days at Grand Rapids and Muskegon, 3 thunder events at Lansing and at Kalamazoo just 1 thunder event. Remember an event is anything from a thunderstorm to a flash of lightning or a clap of thunder. So there has not been much activity at all so far this year.

It really is a beautiful day outside. On the warm side pushing 88 here with a very nice breeze.
I am waiting for some shade out front so I can trim back a mum plant. All of a sudden it has grown. I want it to bloom in the Fall. I keep them trimmed 4 inches high till the 4th of July. Hope you all are enjoying the day. My husband and I are celebrating our 51st Anniversary today. 🙂

Felt like déjà vu reading. Then I realized everything was repeated in the second half of the post. Thanks Slim!

My favorite temperatures are 74-84 degrees for highs. I also don’t mind the mid 60s and low 70s…. But these upper 80s and 90s are really uncomfortable and I only enjoy them if at the pool or in the lake. Hopefully the whole summer is not like this.
