When I get up in the morning the first thing I do is plug in the coffee pot, of course (remember the Weather Coffee Shoppe?), then I open the door next to my chair and prepare to update the site and write this blog. I was greeted by a cool burst of air which actually felt quite nice. Our high for today of 63.6° occurred at midnight and at 6am it is 50.3°.
Yesterday we reached 71.1° which occurred before the rain moved in around 10am then we leveled off in the upper 60s for the rest of the day with a continuous rain which last to 8pm. Rainfall total was 1.69 inches which brings us to 4.58 inches for the month.
Hurricane Michael is now a tropical storm centered over Georgia. It is the first Category 4 hurricane to make landfall in Florida’s Panhandle since record-keeping began in 1851. With a minimum pressure of 919 millibars in the hurricane’s eye, it was the third most intense hurricane landfall in the U.S. in recorded history. Its path will continue into the Carolinas before heading back out to sea.
We can expect mostly cloudy skies today with lake effect rain showers west of U.S.131, and yes we may see our first chances of a widespread frost in S.W. Michigan Saturday morning. High temperatures will struggle to stay around 50° and morning lows will be in the 30s. I am seeing some forecast models showing a wintry mix for Monday but it is still to early to say for sure. The long range CFSv2 models are showing really cold shots coming the end of the month into November. I think is safe to say we will not see any more 80° temps for the rest of the season and probably 70° also. I am thinking I am going to mow the lawn one last time, weather permitting before I put the lawn tractor and mowers away for the season. I also use the tractor for mulching the leaves, half of the leaves have already fallen off my trees.
Possible frost on Saturday morning. It has been a chilly one today.
Kyle Underwood just said the cold is not going anywhere!! GR is on its way for a below normal October!! INDYFALL!!
If only I had a dollar for every time I’ve heard that. He said the same thing about June, July, August, and September. Eventually he’ll get one right.
I like when he says we won’t be seeing any severe weather tonight then we get Tornadoe warning lol! INDYDOG14!
Facing a month of cold with temps 10-20 degrees below average. Ironically, the headlines for Nov 1st will read that, “MI just survived the hottest October in recorded human history!” Simply a game played by a select, special, few.
This is a perfect Fall day!! Seeing some light snow chances Saturday night …Stay Tuned! INDYDOG14!!
Snow and frost are two different things. Lol !
When my sister-in law was still alive and we made many trips to SW Florida we would take the western route Cape Coral. That is down US 31 to I 65 to US 231 to I 10 to US 98 down towards Tampa. Anyway my first nights (on the way down) stop would be Bowling Green, KY Nice town with a lot of good places to eat. And the 2nd night (on the way down) would be Marianna FL. (for some reason the timing was just right) this is a small town with several motels just off I 10 while not as good a place to eat as Bowling Green is there (were) are several restaurants there as well. Any way even thought Marianna is will inland it took a bad beating from Hurricane Michael. Reports are the eye passed right over the city. At the airport winds were reported as 101 MPH. I am sure there was a lot of damage as there are a lot of wood houses there as well as a lot of big old trees around town.

Here at my house I recorded 1.17” of rain yesterday. The current temperature here is 49° with cloudy skies. This should be the high mark for the mean temperature for the month of October. The current mean for Grand Rapids is 62.2° that is good for a departure of +7.5°, We will have to see how this month ends. Also of note is if this is just a short two to three week cool down and back to warm again or a longer lasting pattern change. I know Mookie would like you to believe it has been hot and hotter every day since May but there were brief cool downs in June, July, August and even September. We shall see if this is just a brief cool down or a long lasting one.

A couple of thoughts about Michael (not our gracious host). It only took about 48 hours from the point that it became a named storm to become a nearly Cat 5 storm. I then heard that it only took 72 hours for Camille in 1969 to become a monster Cat 5. We have become spoiled (complacent?) lately of having so much warning time for these types of storms. But alas, Mother Nature always gets the last laugh. Let’s hope this is the last one of the season.
