I keep trying to convince myself that winter is winding down then another blast comes in bringing a return to cold air and blustery conditions. I am ready to chase the moles out of the yard, to plant and get the lawn tractor ready for a season of mowing, but alas we remain adrift in snow with no visible ground in site, at least here in Otsego.
We reached a high of 44° yesterday. I took my mother-in-law to Kalamazoo yesterday morning for an appointment and she was watching the temp readout on the dashboard slowly rise all the way back home. I think she was hoping it would get up into the 70s because she does really hate the cold and I don’t blame her as she is in her 90s.
We are gathering speed into our downhill race towards spring though I don’t think we will get there until at least mid March and am still thinking late March into April will be an interesting period where we may see a more active period of storms due to the fight between air masses from the north and south.
We will be 20° colder today than yesterday with a few snow showers however accumulations will be light – we will see wind gusts close to 30mph which will make for a chilly day so bundle up. Not much will be going on as we settle into a quiet weather pattern through next Tuesday. We are watching the next system which will be coming in on Wednesday which could bring in another several inches of snow.

Not really!
We are now more than half way thru February 2019 and Grand Rapids has made a remarkable recovery in the seasonal snow fall amounts. Since January 15th Grand Rapids has had 41.3” of snow fall and now for the season Grand Rapids is at 60.4” So at this time We are on track for a near to maybe above average winter season as far as snow fall goes. One area we are still well behind average is the number of days with 1 inch or more of snow on the ground. At this time we are at 41 days the average since 1950 at Grand Rapids for the season is 73 the most was 116 days in the winter of 1977/78 with 114 days in the winter of 1958/59 in more recent times the winter of 2013/14 there were 109 days with one inch or more at Grand Rapids. On the low side the winter of 1982/83 there were only 23 days with one inch or more on the ground. In more recent times the winter of 2011/12 there were only 34 days.
Slim
That is a very low total number of days with a inch or more on the ground. Very short and condensed Winter this year.
Looks like lots of near to above average temps coming up too with that big trough setting up out west, so that snow pack is gonna go bye-bye! The average high temps start getting into the 40’s in a couple weeks!

It’s nice to see the sun for a change. We lost more than half our snow yesterday. Our street is not fun- all the slush has turned into a frozen, bumpy mess.
cloudy with light snow and blowing snow here at this time with a temperature of 23.6
