Sunny & Pleasant Weekend

Yesterday’s high/low was 88/69.  More comfortable temperatures are on the way today through Sunday, then the heat and humidity will build back in on Monday and Tuesday. Expect abundant sunshine much of the time, with a chance of showers on Sunday.  Looking at the CPC outlooks it appears that after this weekend temps will be above normal and rainfall below normal for the rest of the month.  Our rainfall for the month thus far is at 2.55 inches in Otsego.

Eight days ago, Indy and I were talking about WOOD’s and WILX’s forecasted high for today. I thought it would be fun to see how accurate their forecasted high would be eight days out. Indy said WOOD forecasted 76 for today’s high. It appears that today’s high in GR was 80. WILX forecasted 87 for today. It appears that Lansing’s high was 83. Both TV stations were off by four degrees.

Wood originally had 73 degrees for today before they raised temps.

After this weekend we may enter a *long* stretch of upper 80s and 90s. My weather app has 88+ until at least July 1st. It seems that the 4th of July is always hot (at least in recent years).

In early 2022, we wondered how the huge drought in the southwestern US would affect our summer. I think we have our answer. The dry and hot conditions seem to be causing more dry and hot conditions. The hottest air is off to our southwest, but, when the Omega ridge sets up, all that neighboring hot air floods into Michigan.

I’m not sure how long the heat will last, but I do fear us slipping into drought conditions. NWS Gaylord mentioned the possibility in there afternoon discussion

HASKELL COUNTY, Kan. (KSNW) — At least 2,000 head of cattle died during the heat in southwest Kansas last weekend, an estimated $4 million loss.

Yikes, that’s a lot of cows. Not good for the farmers and ranchers.

It almost feels cool outside! If it would only last all summer!

Temp of 80, DP of 54. Yep, I’d take this weather every day.

Looks like an overall dry, warm to hot pattern beginning next week. The latest drought map shows drought conditions developing across Iowa and Illinois. Hopefully we do not get entrenched into a dry pattern because they can be hard to get out of. One has to wonder when we will see an uptick in severe weather? MI has only had 64 reports, Wisconsin at 147. Eastern Iowa has been surprisingly quiet as well. The counties in The GRR coverage area that have not had a Svr T-Storm watch are Mason, Lake, Osceola, Clare and Isabella.

Looks like La Niña may stick around for a rare third year. Some implications include another warm summer for us and another active hurricane season in the Atlantic. We will see, but clearly this summer is going to start hot (June 21 is forecast to be 95).

Yes another wave of hot weather. Right now we are cooler this weekend, climbing to the 90s again, down to the upper 80s then back to the 90s again. (According to my phone app). I’m happy with the forecast, because summer is so short. If only we could get some bigger storms to rumble through here

Can’t ask for a nicer morning. Low humidity makes all the difference. I happy to be on the north side of the jet stream. Windows are open to give the A/C a break and it feels great.

The official H/L at Grand Rapids yesterday was 89/70 there was no rain fall and there was 84% of possible sunshine. That low of 70 tied 1919, 1994 and 2018 for the warmest minimum for the date. It was also very windy with wind guest at Grand Rapids as high as 44 MPH. The overnight low in MBY was 62 and the official overnight low looks to have been 64. At this time it is clear and 63 here at my house. For today the average H/L is 80/59 the record high of 95 was set in 1992 and 1994.… Read more »
