We have a cool 49° this morning at 5:30 as cooler air settles in and high pressure dominates our weather pattern this week. Today we will see temperatures reach a high in the low 70s with low humidity and slowly rise to the upper 70s by the end of the week with very little chance of rain in the forecast. A warmer pattern will take shape this weekend with temperatures rising into the 80s.
Yesterday we had a high of 73° and the low was 56°.
Weather History
1992: Temperatures fall into the 30s in some rural areas during the coldest August on record at Grand Rapids. Record lows for the day include 42 degrees at Muskegon and 43 degrees at Grand Rapids.
2007: Heavy rain fell across southern Lower Michigan on the second consecutive day. Grand Rapids and Lansing both set daily rainfall records and some places see over 4 inches of rain for the two-day total on the 19th and 20th.
2016: Tornadoes strike from Bangor to Grand Rapids and east of Belding. There were no injuries, despite damage to several buildings and hundreds of trees being downed.
On August 20, 2011, severe thunderstorms were concentrated mostly along the M-59 corridor, causing the Dream Cruise along Woodward Avenue to be cut short, as minor damage was reported. The other notable item from this event was a weak tornado reported near Chesaning in Saginaw County.
Also on August 20, 1996, 0.29 inches of rain fell in Detroit. This would account for over half of the 0.43 inches that would ultimately fall that month. August 1996 ended up being the driest August of the 20th century for Detroit.

Forecast Discussion
- Lower than normal temperatures into Thursday then warming up Models are in good agreement in showing the 850 mb cold pool centered over the eastern Great Lakes Region slowly pushing east through Thursday. Here in southwest Lower Michigan we will only see gradually moderating temperatures through Thursday with today being the coolest one. Model ensemble temperature values show little spread into Thursday with Highs/Lows remaining below normal and we will feature that in the forecast. Good agreement exists amongst the models with a mid level ridge arriving over the weekend into early next week. Deep warm air advection occurs and strengthens during this period. Based on the projected 925/850 mb temps we will see daytime temperatures climbing into the 80s over the weekend with values approaching 90 early next week. These values are supported by the ensemble values as well. - Small risk for showers and thunderstorms Saturday night into Sunday A weak backdoor cold front is shown to approach the region from the north during this timeframe. At the same time a weak low level jet is shown to approach the area from the southwest. Weak elevated instability is forecast to arrive Saturday night and surface based instability builds Sunday afternoon. Ensemble qpf values are low but have trended up. So we will feature a few showers/storms in the forecast for this period. Given the weakness of these features and that we are looking at day 6, a lot of uncertainty exists.
42 degree warter temp at Grand Haven no way .. I thought it was August 😆…. INDY
