August Climate Summary

Here is the August 2024 climate summary. Temperatures were a little warmer than normal with a cooler period in the middle of the month. While Grand Rapids had below-normal precipitation, many locations were near normal. There were several severe weather events during the month. On August 6th an EF -2 tornado went through Marcellus-Three rivers. For a look at that event go to the Northern Indiana office’s summary: https://www.weather.gov/iwx/08062024_thunderstorms Another was on August 27th that had several swaths of 50 to 70 mph thunderstorm winds.

Summer Climate Summary

Summer 2024 through southwest Michigan was a little warmer than normal overall, though Grand Rapids was very close to normal. The warmest temperatures were in June and in August. There were a few High Maximum low records that were broken in August. Precipitation was near normal in Mid-Michigan. However, along and south of the I-94 corridor it was very wet. Kalamazoo was in the Top 5 for wettest summers and Jackson was near record.

Forecast Discussion

- Relatively cool and comfortable, mostly sunny Labor Day

Upper-level ridging and sprawling high pressure over the Great
Lakes today into Tuesday will provide tranquil weather. A few
daytime cumulus clouds may develop, and good mixing to 850 mb
where temperatures are around 7 C should yield highs in the lower
70s today, several degrees cooler than normal. Dew points will be
dry and comfortable in the 40s to lower 50s. Tuesday will be a few
degrees warmer as a southerly component to the wind commences
with the center of high pressure moving east of the area.

- Warm mid-week period then a late week cool down with showers

A mid-week warming trend takes place due to height rises and
southerly return flow on the back side of the departing sfc high.
High temps of 80-85 are anticipated for Wednesday and Thursday. That
warm up is relatively short lived however as a digging upper trough
over central Canada drops our way toward the end of the week. Mainly
clear conditions eventually giving way to increasing clouds by later
Thursday.

The sfc cold front preceding the incoming upper trough passes
through the state Thursday night and early Friday bringing the
likelihood of a period of showers and storms. This is followed by a
surge of rather chilly air for next weekend with highs only in the
60s. Considerable clouds and a threat of showers expected for
Saturday with the upper low overhead and cold advection over the
warm lake waters (Delta Ts as much as 20C). There is some question
as to how quickly the upper low departs the region with some
indication that warm advection returns for Sunday so its possible we
see some improvement by then.

We really lucked out this season. A vast majority of the US was sweltering with at least 12 heat waves and all time hottest summers. The only part of the US that was spared of that misery was the Great Lakes and upper Midwest regions.

Wonder if we will see any more 90s this year or if they are history? Interesting to note 3 of our 90degree days didn’t even fall in the official summer season. Only 3 90s in the official summer season so far. We shall see if we can squeeze any more out by Sept. 21 before we move to fall on the 22nd. I have enjoyed this summer. Not overall hot (reflected in the near average summer numbers) and ample rains.

Interesting summaries for August and met Summer. Both ended up above average after endless posts telling us we were stuck in a below average pattern. One or the other appears to be wrong. They should start tracking humidity and dew points, it’s been a very humid couple of months.
