Storm Directions

Many like myself have asked why the lack of storms and lake effect snows in SW Michigan?  If one looks at the weather patterns over the past few years low-pressure centers have generally passed by to our west or south, wind direction in the winter has been more northerly when Arctic air does move into the area.  Winters and summers have been on the warmer side.  High-pressure blocking has been in the wrong spot for cold intrusions.  Is this climate change or just a luck of the draw?

We have had very little lake effect this year with the exception of the U.P..  This, as I said before, was due to the wind being more from the north than the west coming across Lake Michigan.  The more northerly winds caused large snowfall amounts coming off Lake Superior.

We can only guess the cause and effect of our great ocean of the atmosphere.  I believe we have been stuck in our pattern over the past several years and things are bound to change and then of course we will complain about too many storms and being buried in snow in the winter.

This summer has been particularly boring thus far, however we are coming into hurricane and tropical storm season which should stir things up perhaps bring a more active weather pattern into our area.  That said, it is all a guess and we just have to deal with what nature brings us.

Anyone that thinks herd immunity is the answer is nuts. The USA is heading for at least a quarter million deaths from covid 19 and you are pushing herd immunity! You must be in favor of death and misery!

We are now in the last 3rd of July and this has been a rather warm July indeed. The current mean at Grand Rapids is 76.3 that is good for +3.8. It now looks like there has been a back off in the heat for this weekend and more so for next week as well. The 90’s are not indicated now for the weekend. That said August is still looking to be very warm to at times hot but that too can change. Generally weather patterns change every 45 to 60 days so we are due for a pattern change.
