Storm Chances

Much if Michigan remains in the marginal risk area for severe weather today with the exception of the southern counties which are at a slight risk.

Warmer air pushing into the state will bring with it the chance for heavy rain and thunderstorms. The first round of rain and thunderstorms will arrive this morning. These storms should not be severe, but they could produce small hail in addition to lightning and heavy downpours. Then another round of wet weather is possible this afternoon through late evening. There is a small risk for severe weather with these storms. All the rain and thunderstorms will bring a risk for local flooding as well, especially over parts of Southern Michigan.

This is the HRRRv2 guess of rainfall totals through Friday morning.  Rainfall could be in excess of two inches in some areas south of Grand Rapids.

Georgia and Fl have low covid 19 test rates! Let’s get their test rates up and really find out what their infection rate is! Georgia is in very bad shape and it will be getting much worse!

Let’s go for a million!

Umm…that’s a complete lie! Georgia has tested almost 300,000 people!! That’s right up there with Michigan and they only have 1,500 deaths. Facts don’t lie!

Mi currently tests approx 35,000 per million population and Georgia at 26,000. Both are too low and Georgia is well behind MI! As you can see facts do tell the story! Get real!

Rocky (Rockford)

Just open everything up with no restrictions and kill a million fellow Americans! America first! What in the world has happened to our society? We need much more testing, tracing, treatments and an infection rate below 1.0! Get real!

Rocky (Rockford) Check out the drop down box for “cases per capita”! The Southern states (LA, AL, MS and Georgia) are being hit very hard, despite the hype about covid 19 slowing down in the warm climates! Those states have no business reopening their economy right now! They will be set back for months if they start reopening right now! The ignorance and incompetence is on full display? https://covid19.topos.com/ April 23, 2020 12:28 pm ………………. Very humid 64 degrees with a dew point of 62. Quite a change from the nice dry air we’ve had recently. As for the whole virus thing, everyone’s opinions and ideas are spread way to far apart. Seems a lot of people are way to extreme one way or the other. We certainly don’t need everything banned and closed, nor do we need everything wide open the way it was. We just need something in the middle where everyone’s still safe, but can also work. Just about any business can take the proper precautions to operate safely. Watching one place… Read more »

She’s assuming she can just run this lockdown for months or years and the Federal Government will just come in and save the day with a bailout to cover all of the lost tax revenue that she is responsible for. Question is, what happens when that bailout doesn’t come??

Rocky (Rockford)
Rocky (Rockford)

I could not disagree with you more! “Just about any business can take proper precautions to operate safely”? That is not even close to possible! You sounds like the Unqualified Governor of Georgia that said barbers and tattoo parlors could open up and follow 6 feet distancing! What planet are you guys from! Fantasy land?

Andy W
Andy W

Well soon, when the weather gets nice, enough people are going to say screw this and just start going out and enjoying life. If people are scared and want to remain shut ins they can go ahead and do that. Remember it’s a free country! Although you would not know that in some states. Soon the Conservative majority Michigan Supreme Court will decide if this unending lockdown of law abiding citizens is constitutionally legal.

Barry in Zeeland
Barry in Zeeland

Well that’s the great thing about having freedoms and rights. If you want to stay locked in your basement, that’s your right. If I want to safely operate my business without harming anyone, that’s my right. We have the ability to safely be open, just as any other large business, with all the safety procedures in place.

Sorry, I’m just tired of being Locked Down! Adults should be left to their own discretion. This isn’t living. The 2 week lockdown has turned into a 2 month lockdown with no end in sight.

Other than walks around the neighborhood, I have left the house probably only a dozen or so times in the past eight weeks. I went the store yesterday and I was surprised how much more traffic there was as compared to the last time I drove. My point is that it appears that many have given up on the stay at home order.

Andy W
Andy W

I see it too Mark. My wife and I are not being dumb about this. We only leave the house once a week to go to Meijer and we both where N95 masks when we are in the store. On the weekends we are at home, once in a while we get local takeout to support our struggling local restaurants and wear our masks to pick up the food. But yes, when we are out now, we see far more vehicles and people out.

Mark (East Lansing)
Mark (East Lansing)

Right on. People need to be smart and take proper precautions. Wear a mask when around others. Wash your hands often or use sanitizer when not near a sink. It’s common freaking sense. It infuriates me that people still go into stores without a mask. IDIOTS! A dude came up behind me when I was in the store. I’m wearing a mask and he wasn’t. I said what is the matter with you, and I told him to step back. I lost my composure and cursed at him. I’m not normally like that, but I was not happy with him.… Read more »

Andy W
Andy W

How long should we stay locked in our houses?? Can your liberal saviors give us a timeline?? A year, 18 months??? That’s why Wisconsin’s Supreme Court overturned the stay home order, there is no clear timeline or anything just an indefinite ongoing lockdown.

Rocky (Rockford)
Rocky (Rockford)

At least until the infection rate is below 1.0 and stays below 1.0!!

Andy W
Andy W

But until that happens, how do we keep everyone fed and getting an income? Then after we open back up again in a year or so, how do we keep supporting the 100 million or so that are unemployed?? I mean at some point you have to strive for herd immunity. The virus will not go away totally. We need answers and definitive timelines, this “just trust us, we know best” is not working.

Rocky (Rockford)
Rocky (Rockford)

Herd immunity is a horrible goal and idea!

Andy W

At some point there will be no choice. The virus will be around for years and we can’t stay imprisoned in our homes waiting for a vaccine that may or may not come. Even Dr Fauci admitted that!

MV has asked to refrain from political commentary multiple times previously. I will voice my opinion about the pandemic, but will try to refrain from leaning left or right. Given that, I thought the one thing that could reunite this country would be a national emergency. It’s worse now than it was just eight weeks ago, sadly.

Andy W

It sure has, because the political leaders and the media outlets have completely politicized this pandemic.

I like what this justice in Wisconsin said INDY:

“This comprehensive claim to control virtually every aspect of a person’s life is something we normally associate with a prison, not a free society governed by the rule of law,” Justice Daniel Kelly wrote in a concurring opinion.

Here was another good quote from one of the justices:

“Isn’t it the very definition of tyranny for one person to order people to be imprisoned for going to work among other ordinarily lawful activities?” asked Bradley, who later questioned whether the administration could use the same power to order people into centers akin to the U.S. government’s treatment of Japanese Americans during World War II.

Kent County continues to explode in the number of COVID cases! In fact, its curve has not been flattened yet – where as most of other counties in Michigan have now flattened the curve. What is going on? Every article I read out of West Michigan says they expect cases to continue rising since they are testing more. And yet, all the other counties are testing more too – and their cases are dropping. Something doesn’t add up.

Slim

Both my son and his wife work for Spectrum and they have been saying the peak here in Kent county would be the 1st or 2nd week of May. Note that goes for Ottawa and Muskegon counties as well. So that looks to be right on time.

https://www.cnn.com/2020/05/13/politics/wisconsin-supreme-court-strikes-down-stay-at-home-order/index.html

Our Supreme Court in Michigan is a 4-3 Conservative Republican Majority. I guarantee they will site this Wisconsin ruling.

Mookie
Mookie

Bars in Madison were packed after the decision – yikes! It’s like people don’t care. We might as well just open everything back up if people are just going to act like that. There’s no point killing jobs and businesses if everyone is eventually going to get it anyway.

Andy W
Andy W

Very true mookie. You can only keep law abiding citizens locked in their house for so long before they revolt. I mean the state can only afford to pay out Unemployment Insurance for a short period of time. If your company or livelihood disappears because of this, what do you do??

Mookie
Mookie

Isn’t it Sweden who said: keep everything open…They only way we’ll solve this is through herd immunity? That seems pretty smart to me. This whole closing of one state versus another state is just silly and clearly isn’t working much. And it’s killing entire livelihoods.

Andy W
Andy W

Exactly! Sweden’s number of deaths is less than our state’s number and they have virtually the same population as our state!

Mookie
Mookie

Yep! And the best part is they are still working and going about 95% of their normal lives. Meanwhile, we are all out of job and will be locked down in some sort until 2021…

Andy W
Andy W

Very true! It’s actually pretty disgusting how blatantly political this Virus has become in our country. I mean look at the breakdown across the nation, Republican Governors are opening up their states with guidelines and Democratic Governors seem to be moving the goalposts on opening up their states and keeping the lockdown going indefinitely with no end in sight.

Slim

Just what guide lines are the republican governors using??????? List the so called guide lines that are being used.
Slim

Andy W
Andy W

Georgia and South Carolina have kept the social distancing and mask guidelines in place while opening up.

https://www.wtoc.com/video/2020/05/14/schools-sports-restaurants-prep-social-distancing-measures-states-reopen/

Mookie
Mookie

The Democrat governors are just as bad. They are clearly politically motivated and want to kill the economy. Bad economy = good for the democrats in 2020. At first, they said we were on lockdown to flatten the curve and help the hospital capacity. Now, the curve is flat and hospitals are mainly empty… and guess what? Now they want to lock down because, heaven forbid, someone may die. Moving goal posts.

Slim

You know I do not see the need to close down most business. I think that they all could be open with masks on and social distancing. This is a issue that the CDC should be in charge of. And they should be the ones who make the guidelines. With this lack of national leadership, we have each state have to make the guidelines as they go. And thus for the planing we have nothing but complete chaos. Mookie, the problem is NOT when someones dies it becomes a problem if YOU die. This should have been a great time… Read more »

Iowa and Georgia are experiencing a huge spike in hospitalizations since their reopenings. Our economy is a disaster. Announced this morning: another 2.981 million unemployment claims filed in the US last week, 36.5 million total in eight weeks. No one could have ever envisioned a crisis like this. I don’t pretend to have any answers, but many, many lives are at risk.

Andy W
Andy W

Hmmm??? That is contrary to what this article says, for Georgia at least Mark?

Mark (East Lansing)
Mark (East Lansing)

Hospitalizations are up. New infections have not increased dramatically because those states are intentionally not testing as many people as other states. It’s a dirty little secret. If you limit testing, the numbers of infected will remain low.

I work in healthcare (prefer not divulge where) and we collaborate with contemporaries in other states and DC. I have access to a lot of data and info from all over the country regarding this pandemic. It’s absurd how this crisis has been handled – especially at the federal level.

Slim

Mark you said some thing that is very true.. That you I nor many others have the answers. There are several states were the virus numbers are up. Texas is one to keep eye on. And the numbers are high in and around Washington. While here in Michigan they are heading down. As for the unemployment that is going to be a issue for a long time.

Regarding the covid-19 statements, We need to do our best to look at it not from a black/white perspective. There are so many schools of thought and “expert opinions” out there. Practice good hygiene, social distancing, and, above all, don’t lick any public door handles!

Slim

With a mean of 47.2 (a departure of -8.6) and 11 of the 13 day below average 6 of them more then 10 degrees below average there is a good chance that it was also one of the coldest starts any May as well.
Slim

The clear starry nights and low humidity certainly played a big part in that. No clouds or moisture to trap in the heat.

Dr Fauci Rocks and give me facts from a scientist over a politician any day of the week! Scientists speak truth and (certain) politicians lie on a regular basis! Science = yes and politicians = no!

Slim

That is what happens when people elect (reality???) TV personalities as president. The CDC should be the ones who make the guide lines with out interference. As I said before I respect the office of the president but the one(s) that are elected must earn that respect.
Slim
