Spring Equinox

Yesterday was a damp cool day.  We had a high of 41.5° and a low of 36°.  We currently have 31° at 7 am under clear skies and a waning 3/4 moon in the west.  Today will be much nicer than yesterday with mostly sunny skies and temps rising into the 50s to welcome in the first day of the spring equinox.

Welcome back to the Northern Hemisphere, sun! At 11:33 AM today, the spot on Earth at which the sun is directly overhead will cross the equator into our hemisphere, marking the spring (vernal) equinox. This spot will continue northward until June 21 (the summer solstice), when its northernmost position will be attained. The sun will remain “above” the Northern Hemisphere until September 22 (the fall equinox), when this spot will again cross the equator, but southward. Here in the Northern Hemisphere, periods of daylight have been steadily lengthening since December 21 (the previous winter solstice). The spring equinox will then begin six months during which the daily periods of daylight will exceed those of night. And, as the sun continues its incrementally higher trek across our southern sky, the Michigan landscape will slowly awaken from its winter slumber.

Forecast Discussion

- Rain showers north of I-96 Monday -

Some rain showers are expected north of I-96 Monday in an area of
isentropic upglide and larger scale forcing north of a stationary
frontal boundary which will extend from near ORD east to CLE by
12Z Mon. Model fcst thermal profiles even across our far northern
fcst area look sufficiently mild enough for p-type to be plain
rain. Dry wx is expected to continue Monday near to south of I-96.

- Rain and some mixed precipitation midweek -

A low pressure system will move ne from the Plains states into our
region for midweek and will bring a prolonged period of wet
weather Tuesday through Thursday. The system will have lots of
gulf moisture to work with and will be a rather slow mover.
Consequently long range ensemble qpf forecasts show potential for
around an inch to two inches of rainfall with this system.
Convection is not expected due to lack of instability.

There is potential for a wintery mix of pcpn Tuesday night through
midweek north of I-96 given persistent e to ne sfc winds that will
result in shallow cold air in place through then. Temps up there
will probably not be cold enough for a longer duration of time
leading to significant impacts. However this will need to be
monitored given potential for fzra with the low level cold air in
place and warmer air coming in aloft.

Get ready, the CPC shows consistent cold the rest of this month! If you like temps in the 40’s and a few days in the 50’s then you are in luck! Personally give cold and snow over temps in the 40’s especially with clouds and rain!
