Forecast Discussion
- Breezy again today; light snow north A clipper over northern Manitoba early this morning will cross the Straits around 00z. Light snow will develop after noon today over the northern cwa. Winds will be gusty again this afternoon ahead of the clipper too, but likely won`t be quite as strong as yesterday. Bufkit wind profiles on the HRRR/GFS/Nam3Km/RAP point toward winds mixing into the 35-40 kt layer, compared to yesterday when they were reaching into the 45-50 kt layer. The difference today is that the winds will be more of a warm advection wind, whereas yesterday`s strongest winds will during the late afternoon and evening associated with the cold front. For this reason, we won`t issue a wind advisory today. However, we`ll see winds gust to 35-40 mph during the afternoon. As the clipper goes by, the trailing cold front may produce some gusty winds late tonight especially over the eastern cwa. We might see winds approach advisory criteria then, but confidence is low on this. Light snow will mainly fall over the northern 2 rows of counties today and 1-3 inches may fall north of US-10 and east of US-131. Little if any snow accumulation is expected south of M-57. - Mixed rain/snow and potential freezing rain late week The next system we`ll be watching will be a southern stream low that will develop over northern Texas and then track to the northern Ohio Valley by Friday. Warm advection ahead of it will push temperatures to near 40 Thursday. Strong isentropic lift will quickly saturate the column and light rain will develop late Thursday afternoon. As the low gets closer Thursday night, winds over the northern cwa will back to the northeast and advect colder air in near the surface. Freezing rain becomes a threat north of M-57 late Thursday night. Models show the cold air winning out Friday morning and the precipitation will transition to light snow over the northern cwa and mix with rain across the southern half of the cwa before ending Friday evening. At this point, a couple of hundredths of ice looks possible; we`ll continue to monitor this.

Four consecutive days with sunshine is a treat this time of year. It helped to clear and dry the roads here. I will use the reprieve from the winter-type winter to wash the salt off of the vehicles.
Have a great day, friends!

If you need to travel any rural Ionia County roads give yourself extra time. Very icy with buildup of snow from drifting. Some of the school district in the area closed today due to the poor road conditions.
