The feature image is the sun setting over Lake Michigan last night taken from the Muskegon GRERL webcam. Sunset is now 7:18 and we have lost two hours in the evening and guess what, it gets even earlier when the time change comes along in early November. This past summer I would have the door open to hear the birds, hardly a peep out there now.
To the left is the current North American snow cover (area in white). Temperatures this morning around the Hudson Bay are in the negative numbers, Thunder Bay is currently 1°. Minot North Dakota is at 34° where there is a winter weather advisory for a large part of the state for up to four inches of snow.
No snow for Michigan in the short and long range forecasts however we will see a wet period of lots of rain especially tonight and tomorrow morning.
Near and south of Interstate 96 there is a marginal risk for damaging winds and large hail. An isolated small tornado is not out of the question. Locally heavy rainfall is expected with these storms tonight.
We can expect periods of rain and storms through next Thursday as a stationary front moves back and forth across the state.
We currently have rain to the west and south of the state so the assumption of wet and dreary are a good bet. Temperatures today will struggle to get to 60°, tomorrow we will see them rise to the 70s as our roller coaster ride continues. The first half of next week we will also see our temps in the 70s to near 80°! Enjoy, because we all know this isn’t going to last…
Here is the reply I received from the Grand Rapids NWS office on September 2018 being the 6th warmest there.
Hi James,
Yes, you are correct with those stats. Good catch!

Nice work, Slim. Way to keep them honest.
That should be the 6th warmest at Muskegon

Any predictions for next summer. 😉
13th warmest September on Record for GR!! Not to bad!! According to some post you would of thought number 1 or 2 Thanks slim! Have a great Friday lots going on around the area this weekend!! INDYDOG14!!
Don’t forget 2nd or 3rd hottest September in most of our lifetimes. We haven’t experienced that warm of a September very often. Like I posted yesterday, it’s been a heck of a run for the heat this year.
It’s been a real summer for sure Barry.
Roller coaster is right. 30 degrees cooler today than yesterday. Tomorrow will be 30 degrees warmer than today. And from this morning’s forecast discussion:
Temperatures will be above normal through the period but the warmest days, with highs possibly rising into the mid 80s in places is expected to be Tuesday.
Knowing that they often low ball the high temp forecasts, I would not be surprised to see some places making a run at 90 again. Wednesday when I was driving through Granville my car thermometer hit 88 degrees.
According to the NWS own records September 2018 with a mean of 65.9° is the 6th warmest on record at Muskegon with 1920 at 66.1° in 5th place and 2005 with 65.8° in 7th place. For the other locations Grand Rapids was in a 4 way tie for 13th place with 2007,1939 and 1900. At Lansing they also were in 13th place and in Kalamazoo they were in a tie for 20th place with 1927.

Here is a copy of the Email that I sent to the NWS office in Grand Rapids on the September summery.
In your September 2018 summery you posted the mean temperatures at 4 locations in west Michigan (Grand Rapids, Lansing, Muskegon and Kalamazoo) and the post stated that while all 4 locations were warmer than average none were in the top ten warmest for September. According to the published records Muskegon’s September 2018 mean of 65.9° should be in 6th place with 1920 at 66.1° in 5th place and September 2005 with a mean of 65.8° in 7th place.
I will let you know if i get a reply on this
