Slow Descent to Winter

Yesterday wasn’t the most pleasant day with a high of 38° and .14 of an inch of cold rain and drizzle (in Otsego).  Some areas east had some snow which should melt away today.  We have had 1.54 inches of rain and a trace of snow in the Otsego area this month with above-normal temps most of the duration.

Looking at data it seems most of the cold and snow has been in Scandinavia and Russia the past couple of weeks as we wait to see if we have weakening in the polar vortex and a disturbance to push it to our side of the northern hemisphere.  Like I said before a lot of stuff has to come into place to produce the cold and snow for the Great Lakes.  There are subtle hints we may start December with some winter-like weather, though not engraved in stone yet.  The CPC still dictates a warmer and dryer than normal start to December.  Forecast models are in general disagreement as usual and should come to a better agreement within a couple days of any event either way.

This week will be our typical gloomy pattern for this time of year with rain chances for southern Michigan off and on.  Thanksgiving appears to be our best day with high temps near 50°, which we should enjoy as the final full week of November closes and we begin our slow descent into winter – or will we be shocked with a sudden polar plunge of Arctic air?  Seems this has been the way of things in our state, a warm pool of air pushed out by a finger of cold air followed by a warm front which melts the snow away…

We are now in late November and the water temperature of the great lakes is still rather warm for this time of year. If there should unusual strong push of cold air in early December (even mid to late December) there would be a set up for some very heavy lake effect snow events. We shall see.

For those of us that have been around since the start of Bill blog it looks like Bill’s blog started sometime 15 years ago. And who remembers Graig James?

I joined Bills blog around 10 years ago. I did not have a chance to be a member of Craig James’ blog because I was too young before that. Although I do follow him on Twitter and know he is a great guy.

Too bad the corporate money hungry media company running Wood told Bill he could no longer allow comments on his blog. Talk about eliminating freedoms. A blog with no comments? Ridiculous! I have not been to his blog ever since!

Yes, Michael, tis the season of gloom in west MI… I am grateful for the unusual amount of sun we have had this month, however. I will finish putting up the snow fence today, which reminds the plow not to drive up into our flower beds along the cul de sac. I wonder how many more days it will be before I hear that familiar rumble wake me at 6 a.m.
