We have about a 30% chance of rain for SW Michigan today with better chances in the SE portions of the state. After today we will begin another extended period of dry, above-normal temperatures.

6 15 azoU.S.A and Global Events for June 15th:
1987: Thunderstorms developing along a cold front produced severe weather in the northwestern U.S. A tornado damaged five homes and destroyed a barn near Salmon, Idaho. It lifted a metal shed 100 feet into the air and deposited it 100 yards away. Hail an inch and a half in diameter caused ten million dollars in damage to automobiles in Nampa, Idaho.
1991: The second largest volcanic eruption of the 20th Century began as Mt. Pinatubo injected 15 to 30 million tons of sulfur dioxide 100,000 feet into the atmosphere. 343 people were killed in the Philippines as a result of the eruptions, and 200,000 were left homeless. Material from the explosion would spread around the globe, leading to climate changes worldwide as the sun’s energy was blocked out and global temperatures cooled by as much as one degree Fahrenheit. 1992 was globally one of the coldest since the 1970s. Forecast Discussion
.SHORT TERM...(Today through Friday) Issued at 330 AM EDT Thu Jun 15 2023 Scattered showers and a few thunderstorms today as a shortwave trough moves through in northwest flow. Some afternoon enhancement of convection is possible especially across the southeast forecast area where model soundings show best moisture and instability. JXN sounding shows about 1200 J/kg of CAPE by 18Z and any convection there will have to be watched for isolated wind and hail threat. The showers and storms should be moving east and out of the forecast area by this evening with cooler and drier air on north flow as advancing high pressure builds in behind the departing low. Fair weather Thursday night and Friday under surface high with low humidity. .LONG TERM...(Friday night through Thursday) Issued at 330 AM EDT Thu Jun 15 2023 --High pressure dominates through the weekend into next week-- As an upper level trough treks eastward into and through the mid Atlantic this weekend, a positively tilted upper level high pressure system will seep into the area Friday night into Saturday. There will be a downsloping gradient due to this approaching high and that gradient should produce gusty winds, especially along the lakeshore. Also accompanying this high pressure system will be a dry air mass which will keep the region mostly if not completely precipitation free. The only chance during this timeframe will be Sunday evening into Monday along and south of the I 94 corridor. Temperatures will increase into and through the weekend and continue into the middle of next week. Expect maximum temperatures to be back into the 80s by Saturday and continue to be in the low to mid 80s through the middle of next week. The EC, GFS and Canadians ensembles show a similar upper level low moving northward from the southern USA through the Eastern United States. That dominant low should eventually bring moist easterly flow into the Great Lakes region by the middle of next week. There is still some questions on timing, and amounts of moisture. However most ensembles have this low retrograde enough to bring chances of showers to the area through the latter half of next week.
I just saw a bad accident in 28th street… will probably be on the news soon
Hail around Ping Pong Ball size at my location a few minutes ago. I’m near Hamburg in Livingston County.
That was one strong mid June cold front that came thru. It is now 5:08 and the temperature is now down to 63 here in MBY for a very cool mid June early evening.

And yes Nathan I can smell camp fire in the air definitely smokey outside today just done cutting my grass in places not all of it I do have some tall grass in places but with the smoke in the air I am skipping a fire this afternoon definitely thick outside…INDY
Cool temps = fantastic!
Drought = horrendous!
Yes!! Cooler June just like May April March and February wont be long September will be here.. INDY
Just another of many below normal temp days! Incredible cool pattern!
I’m in Howell. Ready to intercept the Severe Warned storm currently over Ingham County.
Dark clouds just off to the east and south have been forming over the past 30 minutes. Now getting thunder. The forming showers and thundershowers are literally 2 to 3 miles away but again, we’re on the back side of it. We’re probably going to get nothing. 🙁
Special Weather Statement: At 348 PM EDT, Doppler radar was tracking strong thunderstorms along
a line extending from near Laingsburg to 5 miles south of Lansing to
near Homer. Movement was east at 25 mph.
At this point, even a thunderstorm won’t do much to get out of the moderate drought. You might get a few days of greener grass, but it’ll burn out again next week with the heat.
Once we get into a drought… it’s hard to get out!
And of course, it’s now a severe thunderstorm. Like Maxwell Smart would say, “Missed it by that much.”
Not weather related but I see WOOD is in the national news for trying to lessen Pride coverage “because of their conservative viewership.” Makes sense now what happens in the weather department over there.
Please skip the politics and stick with your ridiculous warm weather hype!
69 out in my area after a nice morning heavy rain shower Im thinking its time to build a fire put some music on and drink a cold sprite on this Thursday afternoon loving this cooler June!!! Its a perfect Summer day …INDY
Did not get much rain here in MBY but the temperature is now dropping rather fast and is now down to 68 here. And in the UP there are a lot of mid 40’s
Slim
77 here and humid. Front will move through shortly and drier air will filter back in.
68 degrees and cloudy in GR wow!
Boy it is a cool mid June day in much of northern Michigan. There are a lot of mid afternoon temperatures in the mid 40’s with fog along Lake Superior. And even away from the lake locations in the UP and in norther lower Michigan are only in the low to mid 50’s
Slim
Barely made 50 degrees up there! incredible!
It is now cloudy and a cool mid June afternoon. The temperature has now fallen down to 70 and it feel very cool out side at this time.

Are we getting smoke again? It seems very like golden out and the sky is quite milky.
There is a minor layer of smoke over the area and a layer of clouds over the NW half of the area. So I think a combination of both.
The main severe weather risk later today is over the SE part of the area, which is currently under mainly clear skies.
It is now cloudy here in MBY and the temperature has dropped down to a cool 70.

Interesting map
Here in MBY there was just 0.03″ of rain fall. Not much to say the least.

Getting a brief shower right now. Just enough to dampen the pavement. After today it looks dry once again with warming temps and warmer overnight lows.
It looks like the entire area was (unsurprisingly) upgraded to a moderate drought: https://droughtmonitor.unl.edu/
Just had a decent shower here. Unfortunately it looks like it was pretty localized. Otherwise this weekend is looking fantastic! The final weekend of spring
We met some friends for dinner last night. We were near downtown and ate outside late in the day. Beautiful evening to share a meal with friends.
Heading to the lake for the three-day weekend. The weather looks to be spectacular to be on (in?) and around the water.
Have a great day friends and remember, you gotta make someone smile. 🙂
Have a great weekend!!
Thanks, you too Sandy!
The official H/L at Grand Rapids yesterday was 73/50 there was no rain fall and 43% of possible sunshine. There were 3 HDD’s and 0 CDD’s. For the month Grand Rapids, Holland and Lansing now have a below average mean for June. Muskegon is still above average.

The overnight low in MBY was 51 and at the current time it is 52 with cloudy skies. For today the average H/L is now up to 80/58 the record high of 97 was set way back in 1894 the record low of 43 was set in 1999. The record rain fall amount of 2.51” fell in 2010.
Slim
There is a 40% chance of showers today then dry until mid week next week. Today should be the last of the cool mid-June days as it looks to warm up over the weekend and stay warm until Wednesday at least. There is also a better chance of some rain late next week.
