Shivering Groundhogs! Winter Weather Advisory

The winter weather advisory in place is set to expire at 1pm – wouldn’t be surprised if a new advisory is issued this afternoon due to a synoptic event heading our way.  If a groundhog decides to peek out today they will likely quickly retreat back into their hole.  Wind-chills are at or near zero this morning we have a dusting of snow here in Otsego.  Below is the January climate summary for Grand Rapids, Lansing and Muskegon.

Punxsutawney Phil, the world’s most famous groundhog, lives a pretty charmed life. He and his groundhog wife, Phyllis, reside in their own zoo at the town library in Punsxutawney, Pa., where visitors can peer at them through an outside window. The groundhogs dine on hand-chopped produce and nap on a bed of soft hay.  So, apparently they live the good life with the exception of having to be dragged out of their comfort zone once a year for public display.

Lake effect snow showers will wind down through the course of today. Additional accumulations of an inch or two are possible through midday, bringing storm total snowfall to 3 to 5 inches in some spots. Very cold air will remain in place today with high temperatures only expected to make it into the teens. Wind chill values will hover around zero today.

The focus this weekend will be on an area of low pressure that will ride northeast along a polar front across Lower Michigan. Snow is expected from late tonight through Sunday. Through the course of the weekend, accumulating snow is expected area wide. The heaviest snow though will fall north and west of a Grand Haven to Big Rapids to Evart line.

This will be a fairly long duration snow event in some spots. The snow event is multi faceted, with some southwest flow lake enhancement late tonight into Saturday morning, followed by warm air advection snow beginning Saturday afternoon which will last into Saturday night. Some snow along the polar front will continue into Sunday. At this point will let the current headlines play out before issuing new headlines.

The heaviest snow late tonight through Sunday should occur in the northwest CWA for locations like Ludington, Baldwin, White Cloud, Pentwater and Whitehall. These areas look to see 6 inches or more of snow. The remainder of the area including Grand Rapids and Lansing and points south to I-94 are likely looking at a 3 to 6 inch event. The focus today will be on if and where headlines are needed for the Saturday- Sunday snow.

Nice stats and January wrap Slim! Very intriguing that for as cold as it’s been at times, and for all the snow snow snow talk, we are not only behind average snowfall, but we are behind last years snowfall total. And the ground is still mostly bare…..

Woke up late today (have slight sore throat and cough) looked out the window and see what I at first thought was frost but no wait it is yes snow. That is right a very frost like amount of snow fall here on the roofs and top of the cars. Temperature here is now 15° I had a low here at my house of 8° and that is cold for no snow on the ground.

Weather geeks, take a look at this. As I said before, the models are becoming very interesting. They are now showing a “Polar Vortex split” for mid February where the coldest air goes west and back into Eurasia and we suddenly get mild. I’ve never seen a split like this before.

Check this out! We are heading into a very COLD and SNOWY pattern! We are right on track for an above normal snowfall winter! Remember all of the so called experts predicted a back loaded winter! Who would have thought?

Actually, all the experts forecasted more of a front-ended winter since the Great Lakes were at record levels with lots of lake effect potential. But it didn’t happen. WOOD also predicted above average snowfall, and that has not been the case either.

The groundhog is only like 38% accurate. Thank goodness we have Bill Steffen. 🙂

CFSv2 is trending warm for mid February onward now! Even the CPC’s 8-14 day outlook barely has us below average temps now. Confidence is growing that we’ll be warming into spring soon.

I guess today would be another example of how cold does not always equal snow. It’s plenty cold, but barely any snow.

*SS*

For sure. I always say…if it is going to be cold please let us have some snow to play in at least. Not much you can do outside in this cold, but sit inside and have hot chocolate. LOL!!!
