Shivering Crocuses! Temperatures are in the teens this morning with a few single digit readings sprinkled in mainly north of Grand Rapids. We will break out of this cold pattern with gradually warming temperatures this week. By the end of the week we should be in the 50s, perhaps 60°! The downside is we will be entering a wetter pattern to go with the warm air. We do have an area of rain/snow mix moving in for late tonight into tomorrow that could bring a sloppy morning commute.
This week is Severe Weather Awareness Week for Michigan.
Gov. Rick Snyder has proclaimed April 8-14 as Severe Weather Awareness Week and the Michigan State Police, Emergency Management and Homeland Security Division (MSP/EMHSD) is encouraging Michigan residents to prepare before severe weather strikes this spring and summer.
“Severe Weather Awareness Week is the time of year to learn what to do before, during and after severe weather occurs,” said Capt. Chris A. Kelenske, Deputy State Director of Emergency Management and Homeland Security and commander of the MSP/EMHSD. “In Michigan, severe weather can include flooding, thunderstorms and tornadoes. By taking the initiative to learn about possible hazards and what to do until help arrives, you and your family will be better prepared when an emergency or disaster happens.”
Spring and summer frequently bring fast-changing weather conditions that increase the potential for severe weather. Steps can be taken to prepare before severe weather strikes to minimize damage and ensure safe evacuation or shelter, such as understanding severe weather warnings and terms, preparing an emergency supply kit, making an emergency plan and creating an emergency contact list.
Last year, the state of Michigan experienced thunderstorms and flooding in Bay, Gladwin, Isabella and Midland counties that was severe enough to result in a federal disaster declaration due to the magnitude of the damage.
Statewide Tornado Drill on April 11
A voluntary statewide tornado drill is scheduled to occur at 1 p.m. EDT on Wednesday, April 11. Businesses, organizations, families and individuals are encouraged to engage in this statewide preparedness activity, but are not required to do so. Nearly all state of Michigan facilities will participate.
About Severe Weather Awareness Week
Severe Weather Awareness Week is sponsored by the MSP/EMHSD and Michigan Committee for Severe Weather Awareness to educate the public about the dangers of tornadoes and other severe weather events, including the precautions that can be taken to save lives and protect families.
Ready for Thunderstorms out at thee YARDofBRICKS!! INDYDOG14
April is well below normal for temps and above normal for snowfall and more snow is in the forecast the next 2 days! Truly an INCREDIBLE COLD stretch!!
Not that out of the ordinary when it just happened 2 years ago, just as I outlined below!
I don’t know if Slim has mentioned this before, but this April is strikingly similar to how April 2016 started out! So really, you only have to go back a couple years when our April was the same for our area. Check out the GRR NWS CF6 and click on April 2016 to see the similarities. Only considerable difference is April 2016 had around 9 inches of snow in the first 9 days compared to about 3 inches this April! So for all the crowing about the tremendous amounts of snow for GR this April, the snowfall in April 2016… Read more »
Let’s hope so it’s going to be mid April soon .. INDYDOG14!!

Yes, only another 2 weeks of below normal temps!
Well, even temps in the low 50’s now are considered below normal, so who cares about that, we’re not getting snow with temps in the 50’s!
See Slim’s post below:
The average high’s starting Wednesday are 55,57,57 and 58.
Eh….only a few days of trash weather after Wednesday! Temps mostly in the 50’s now! Great for outdoor projects!

The skiing up in SNOW COUNTRY was INCREDIBLE! PERFECT MID WINTER LIKE SNOW CONDITIONS! Probably the best April skiing in Lower MI ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Who would have thought?
WOOD now has 52, 56, 60, 55 beginning Wednesday!
If that plays out that would still be 1 high above average and 3 still below average. The average high’s starting Wednesday are 55,57,57 and 58. the first 7 days this month the mean temperature of 30.3° that is a departure of -13.0° for the month. The seasonal total snow fall at GRR is now 74.7″ the 30 average as of this date is 74.0″ Using the NWS numbers the current 30 average seasonal snow fall for GRR is 74.9″

And Sunday 48* the heat is on lol! INDYDOG14!!
Mookie is desperate for a warm up and above normal temps! I say embrace the SNOW and COLD! We have more snow coming tonight and tomorrow night! Who would have thought?
I had 11.7 for a low here. My sister lives in Baldwin and it got down to -3 up there!! Old man winter is just hanging on!
I had a low of 12.7° rounded up to 13° so it was very cold last night. Is there snow on the ground in Baldwin? I think if we had s solid snow cover it would have gotten much colder here last night.
Slim
Yes, there is snow on the ground up there so that probably made the difference.
8th day in a roll below normal temps now ! INDYDOG14!!
Here at my house I had a low of 13° overnight, The official low at GRR last night looks to be 16 While the record low for this date is +7 set in 1982 todays low of 16 is only the 4th time it has gotten this cold this late in April in Grand Rapids in the last 120 years the other times are that +7° on April 8th 1982, 14° on April 11th 1973, 15° on April 10th 1989 and 16° on April 8th 1972. If my low of 13° would be official (it is not) then that would… Read more »
14* out at thee YARDOFBRICKS this morning that’s April cold!! INDYDOG14!
I had a low of 13 here at my house.
Slim
Cold this morning! But still 20°warmer than the record low. I hadn’t realized how cold the record low was for today.
Like this year April 1982 had a very cold snap and the two coldest nights in recorded history happened back to back with on April 7 and 8 the lows reached +3 and 7 at Grand Rapids and a bitter -2 and +8 at Lansing and a +1 and +4 at Muskegon BUT there was between 6 and 10 inches of snow on the ground in that year so if we had that much snow on the ground it would have gotten colder the last two night this year as well.
