Yesterday we had a high of 89° and a low of 53° with mostly clear skies. Our last good rainfall was on August 17.
I always wondered what meteorologists talked about in the desert SW where they have over 340 days of sunny weather. We will continue our sunny dry pattern for at least another week, end of story.
Weather History
1939: A record breaking heat wave begins with the temperature hitting 95 degrees at Grand Rapids.
1952: Muskegon reaches 92 degrees for their third record high temperature in a row.
1962: A severe thunderstorm struck Lansing with wind gusts over 65 mph, producing light damage across the city.
2008: Five tornadoes strike southern Lower Michigan. Four of the tornadoes were spawned by one thunderstorm. A car dealership and a restaurant were damaged in Paw Paw and weak tornadoes damaged trees near Mattawan in Allegan County, Millers Corner in Kalamazoo County, and Brookfield in Eaton County. Several buildings had roof damage from a tornado that struck Plymouth in Wayne County.
On September 13, 2019, severe storms tracked across the Metro Detroit and Thumb regions. Hail up to golf ball sized was observed in southwest Oakland County while a wind gust to 72 mph was measured over the Detroit River.
On September 13, 2008, tropical rains started to fall over Southeast Lower Michigan. In about 48 hours from the evening of September 12 to the evening of September 14, 3 to 6 inches of rain fell. The rain was in part due to a slow moving cold front that crossed Lower Michigan associated with moisture from a Pacific tropical storm and the remnants directly from Hurricane Ike that struck the Texas coast on September 12.
Also on September 13, 1962, in Wayne county there were wind gusts of 73 mph along with a thunderstorm.
NWS Forecast
Forecast Discussion
- Fair and Very Warm Conditions Today and Saturday Ridging at the sfc and aloft will continue to dominate the wx pattern and result in fair and unseasonably warm wx today and Saturday. H8 temps around 17C and h5 heights around 588 dM suggest high temps should easily reach the mid 80s the next couple of days. Some high cloud cover is expected today due to the remnants of Francine. In addition some smoke aloft will result in hazy conditions at times. Low temps tonight will range from the mid 50s to low 60s with partly cloudy skies. - Very Warm and Dry Conditions Persist through Next Week The mid to upper level anticyclonic flow prevails through the period. Subsidence associated with this feature will support keeping the forecast dry. The GFS and Canadian do try to draw some Atlantic moisture in from the east southeast for the middle part of next week. However the ensemble qpf forecasts for these models have only one or two members with precipitation, while nearly all the other members are dry. For this reason we will keep the forecast dry. Forecast 850 mb temperatures remain generally in 14 to 16 deg C range through the period. Mixing to this level supports max temperatures into the 80`s each day. The Canadian does show a dip in the max temperatures for middle part of next week, but that appears to be related to the moisture/clouds that its trying to advect over the Appalachians. For now we will keep high temperatures in the 80`s each day until it becomes more certain that values will be lower.
Temps in the 80’s during the day and lows still fall into the 50’s at night makes for perfect bond fire weather who doesn’t love Fall??? INDY
Not even October and the trees are already starting to look beautiful around west Michigan can we say early peak this year I love it! INDY
It has been very dry so that is one reason for some of the change.

I seen a couple monarch the other day. I think they are beginning their southward flight out of here. When I lived in Byron Center 10+ years ago we were along a flight path for monarch. There would be butterfly’s all over. They would gather in the trees by our house. If I had to guess probably hundreds. It really was a beautiful thing to see. We had lots of milkweed in the field by our house.
We have at least another 2 weeks of full blown summer. I love long summers!
In recent years there has been many times that September 10th to the 20th has has many warm summer like days. That could be a new trend.

We are the time of year where it can be summer or fall depending on the pattern. Clearly summer is going to stick around for a while… but that will change eventually. Still not much to talk about, even the tropical are (relatively) slow for this time of year
