Reminisces – Weekend Weather

I have made it through another year (yea!).  I have always wondered about birthdays celebrations until I reached retirement and beyond and have realized each year is a blessing.  This is the point where one jokes about being old as dirt and being around when dinosaurs roamed the earth.

When I hear the grandkids complain about being bored I tell them when I was a youngster all we had were sticks and rocks to play with.  We had imagination back them so the sticks and rocks could be anything we wanted them to be.  (I am sure Slim can verify this) 😆

I was born at the beginning of the space age in the 50s which was born from technology from WW2 which brought us the tech we enjoy today.  I have been interested mainly in the rockets of the 1960s and beyond, computer tech, and of course the weather.

I kept paper records of the daily weather before computers were accessible to the common person, sure wish I still had those notebooks.  I think we are spoiled with the tech we enjoy today but of course, I enjoy that tech as much as most everyone else.  I was quite young when we got our first black and white TV and it was a luxury to have a HiFi with a record player.  I wonder with the fast advance of technology what things will be like when my grandkids get to be my age…

So much for reminisces for today…

Our high temp yesterday was 84° and our overnight low was 59.4° (in Otsego)

Today we will see a slight chance of showers this morning, then showers and thunderstorms likely after 2 pm. Partly sunny, with a high near 82. Light south wind becoming southwest 6 to 11 mph in the morning. Winds could gust as high as 23 mph. The chance of precipitation is around 60% late this afternoon and evening. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch are possible, except higher amounts are possible in thunderstorms. This evening and overnight some areas could see a half to three-quarters of an inch of rain.  This weekend will feature increasing humidity levels with small chances of showers and storms.

Forecast Discussion:

- Thunderstorms late this afternoon and evening

Thunderstorms will develop late this afternoon and evening
coincident with peak instability from daytime heating and
downstream of an upper level disturbance and potential mcv moving
in from the west. Although there is a chance for a storm just
about anywhere later this aftn/eve it seems that areas near to
mainly south of KGRR are most favored for convection in the 21Z to
03Z time frame as suggested by the 00Z HREF and several CAMs.

Severe/organized convection is not expected largely due to rather
weak deep layer shear. However I would not be surprised if
stronger storms contain some sub severe winds given dcape in the
500-1000 j/kg range. In addition with pwat values up around 1.5
inches and potential for some training/slow moving storms there
is potential for locally heavy rainfall as well.

Then for this weekend there is potential for a hit or miss shower
or storm in the increasingly humid and unstable airmass but the
vast majority of the weekend should be dry given lack of a
focusing mechanism for convective initiation to occur this wknd.

- More thunderstorms late Sunday night through Monday night

A mid to upper level system will bring potential for showers and
storms Sunday night through Monday night. The severe wx threat
seems low at this time largely due to lack of stronger deep layer
shear for organized convection. However precipitatable water
values by then will be even higher so heavy rainfall seems possible.

- Very warm and humid this weekend through Wednesday

A consensus of latest medium range guidance continues to indicate
it will be increasingly warm and humid through the weekend with
high temps by Sunday near the 90 degree mark with dew point values
well into the 60s to lower 70s. Some cloud cover moving in from
the west out ahead of the next system may hold max temps mainly in
the 80s however. Either way it will feel oppressively humid by
then and the heat and humidity will linger through the middle
portion of next week.

Happy Birthday. I turned “a lousy number” yesterday as well. Noon rainfall today provided a quick 4/10.

The overnight low here was a mild 64 and it looks like the official overnight low at GRR was 62 At this time it is cloudy here with some rain to the west over the lake. The first 5 days of August have been below average here at GR. At this time it is cloudy and 73 here.

Happy Birthday MV. When I was young we would “play” outside all day long. On rainy days we would play in the basement. When in school there was homework and play time then was either outside or back in the basement. My dad had a radio/TV repair business so we always had good radios and many TV’s but remember we only had 2 stations when I was young (well more as we could get the Detroit stations) as my dad bought a tall antenna.

Hmm, the forecast discussion mentions it will feel oppressively humid yet a couple on here say there’s no heat and humidity in sight and the heat index isn’t real. One or the other would appear to be wrong.

Slim

With one of our posters planning a trip to southwest Florida he will see heat and humidity that we do not see in our area. On August 3rd Fort Myers, FL had a temperature of 86 with a dew point of 79 giving them a heat index of 100 over the last 3 days the lowest DP at Fort Myers was 71 and the highest was that 79. I have been in Fort Myers in August and it is HOT and HUMID so we shall see how our poster reports that.

That’s a good example of a 100 heat index without being 90 degrees, as the chart below shows. All depends on the dew point, but if someone does not believe in the heat index I guess it’s all moot.

Rocky (Rockford)

Yes just like if someone does not believe in science or vaccines. Talking with them is moot and a total waste of time!
