We welcome the first day of May today with showers and possibly a thunderstorm. Much-needed rain will continue tonight into tomorrow morning with up to an inch altogether.
Weather History

On May 1, 1983, the county of Monroe was hit by an F1 tornado that tore through the county at 11:55 PM. It caused about $3,000 in property damage.
Forecast Discussion
- Showers/scattered storms today Today looks like a fairly wet day. Low pressure currently over Missouri will move to near MKG by 19z. Regional radar shows a large area of showers moving north across IL/IN/eastern IA. Lightning has reached the MI/IN border and will continue trekking north today. A 50 kt LLJ will draw abundant moisture northward this morning toward the cwa. HREF LPMM indicates rainfall potential today of 1.5 to 2 inches over the northwest cwa. Model blend QPF is a bit lower, but still substantial 1.25 inches. Thus, a decent soaking is expected. Instability isn`t all that impressive today, but MUCAPE of a few hundred joules/kg suggests that the thunder threat will continue. A few of the stronger showers/storms may produce some gusty winds though, given the strong winds in the lower trop. - Cool Weekend Once the low passes by today models shows deep upper troughing over the upper MS Valley moving over the state Friday and Saturday. A strong short wave rounding the base of the upper trough will induce another low over the lower OH Valley Saturday. However, it looks like this low will skate by to the southeast and just miss the cwa with any precipitation. But, the upper trough will keep cooler air over the cwa and highs Friday and Saturday will range from the mid 50s to around 60; average highs are in the mid 60s. Despite the cooler temperatures, we should see a fair amount of sunshine over the weekend as high pressure to the northwest builds over the state. - Warmer next week Ensemble temperatures for next week have trended down in recent days due to the aforementioned short wave cutting off over IL/IN. This could keep showers in play early next week and temperatures a bit cooler than they`d be without the cutoff low nearby. Still, parts of the cwa remain in drought, any rainfall will be beneficial.

As predicted, April ended up warm after a very warm March. If the CPC is accurate, May could end up being warm too.
