Quiet Period

Twas the night before another winter weather advisory

And all through the state, all the humans were startled of having to wait

For another snow of an inch or less or the best the models could guess

With hopes of a foot or more, some hung their heads in distress.

We had another inch of snow overnight, as I said, we are getting inched to death this winter.  With twelve days left of the meteorological winter, our dreams of even being close to average are lost unless we can pick up a quick snowstorm of a couple of feet.  Being a man of positive attitude our mild winter has been great news for those who dislike hard winters – heating bills are lower, it has been easier to take being outside, easier to drive on Michigan roads (with the exception of craters forming) and less stress on our bodies having to shovel the snow.

Today and tomorrow winter will be straining with its last gasp with windy conditions and falling temps, perhaps a few snowflakes mixed in as a teaser.  After that temps will begin to rise once again to above normal melting the snow leaving some weeping as another winter closes the door behind them.

I am not even going to try to guess what March will bring, as I and most of the Mets have failed miserably, however it all is only a crapshoot and I am not going to apologize or hang my head in shame.

NWS Discussion:

-- Low chances for snow tonight through Thursday --

This will be from a combination of a frontal boundary and lake
effect. An upper wave clipping across Northern Michigan will push a
cold front down into Lower Michigan late tonight and Wednesday
morning. Saturation in the DGZ is not too impressive per model
forecast soundings, but we could see a few flurries or a dusting of
snow near/north of I-96 where low-level lapse rates look to become
quite steep and where better moisture will be placed. Steepening
lapse rates and rising inversion heights over Lake Michigan in the
wake of the front, and greater saturation of the DGZ will increase
potential for lake effect snow. That being said, inversion heights
only look to peak at 4000 feet late tonight/early Wednesday morning
per NAM forecast soundings, and not much accumulation is expected
even within the lake effect belts. It looks like we could see a lull
in activity Wednesday before another shot of cold air Wednesday
night brings another round of scattered lake effect showers with
only light accumulations.

-- Brief stretch of cold weather tonight through Friday morning --

Similar to a few other stretches we have seen this winter, a mid-
week intrusion of arctic air into the area will be short-lived. High
temperatures Wednesday and Thursday will only reach the 20s, while
low temperatures Thursday and Friday mornings drop into the single
digits to low teens. Winds do not look strong during this period,
and expect wind chills to stay above zero and frostbite times to
remain more than 30 minutes.

We have a very cold week on tap and then another cold front the middle of next week for more below normal temps! This after mookie said no cold air around here for at least 4 weeks! Once again the facts get in the way of the warm wether fantasies! Incredible!

Mark (East Lansing)
Mark (East Lansing)

Only five of the 17 days this month have had below average temperatures.

Rocky (Rockford)
Rocky (Rockford)

like I said a cold week ahead and then another cold front and trend towards below normal temps by the middle of next week! How is that possible with all he warm weather hype?

Mark (East Lansing)
Mark (East Lansing)

You said “more below normal temps,” which would lead the reader to believe that we have experienced below normal temps, which is untrue.

Here’s a fun read. The graphs are a true indicator of what this winter has been like.

Nice find Mark! All rings true with no ice on the big lake and little to no snow pack. Best statement……” While we will have a couple of one to two day cooldowns, you don’t see anything that looks like a full-scale weather pattern change.”

Great post, MV. Made me audibly chuckle.

What little snow we received overnight was melted and washed way by morning. At least the roads were clear for the morning commute.

Mookie

The snow is melting! The snow is melting! I love how quickly it melts late in the season.

Slim

Hopefully everyone is done with their claims to snow and cold and the lack of. Here are some facts. Officially yesterday Grand Rapids recorded 1.7” of snow fall that brings February to 13.8” (the 30 year average for a 28 day February is 14.8” so GR needs just one more inch to be average for the month) For meteorological winter GR now has 39.6” and for the season 46.4” As of yesterday at 7 AM GRR reported 2” of snow on the ground. Today I have 2.5” on the ground. Grand Rapids has a chance of making the average snow… Read more »

6 out of 7 up north reporting locations are reporting below average snowfall – with the highly questionable West Branch location the only outlier. Gaylord and Traverse City are now more than a foot of snow below average.

Slim

I looked at the West Branch daily reports and see no reason to question the snow fall totals there.
Slim

Mookie
Mookie

Records don’t go back very far there, right? I remember you questioning West Branch just last week.

Slim

The reported records at West Branch going back to 1952 are well kept up to date before that not so much. I see no reason question the total reported for this winter season. In the past there are some years where the seasonal totals are not recorded but there are monthly totals. Being that far south and east (for norther lower Michigan) they do not get as much lake effect as locations to their north and west. So bottom like is they would generally get less snow then Houghton Lake and Alpena but more snow than Saginaw and that seems… Read more »

Mookie
Mookie

We aren’t even close to 50″ of snow on the season Rocky promised us over a week ago, and there’s no big accumulating snow in sight for weeks. Bring on spring!

INDY

We have had snow now for the last 11 out of 13 days I’m thinking the CPC has been of it’s rocker with all that red you been showing the blog ..I still have over 5 inches of snow on the ground NE of GR it’s been that way for most of February so much for less snow chances coming in February right? WOOD is reporting no significant precipitation for the next 8 days and a big warm up!

“A mild and dry weather pattern will develop with the cold air staying in Canada and mild Pacific air flooding the Great Lakes Region.”

Even though Rocky and Indy said we were getting “hammered” last night, it was another failed WWA with a whole inch of snow. Not surprised!

Love the little poem! Only about a meager inch here as well, but no way to measure it because it’s already all melted since temps have been well above freezing most of the night. With virtually no accumulating snow in any of the 10 day forecasts, could February also end up below normal in snow? How can this be possible?

Rocky (Rockford)
Rocky (Rockford)

We have plenty of cold air and snow chances coming up over the next 2 woks and snow country looks incredible! Bring it!
