I was very sad to hear of the passing of Roy Clark. In my book he was one of the greatest banjo and acoustic guitar players of all times. Many don’t know he was an accomplished mandolin, fiddle and classical guitar player also. His life was so much more than Hee Haw which ran from 1969 to 1997 which he co-hosted with Buck Owens, another great in his own right. Though his music was mainly folk and country I placed him in the top guitar players of all times along with Jimmy Hendrix and Jimmy Page. This may sound strange to you in the day and age of many greats but you have to look beyond the realm of rock and roll to see there were many great musicians in all the other genres.
I had many guitars over the years, however the sound of a non electrified acoustic guitar was my favorite. I had an electric guitar for a while but I gave it to my brother who learned to play it and later became a professional lead guitar player for several bands in the Grand Rapids area. Roy Clark was one of the guitar players who I learned from via albums and 8 tracks as I played mainly folk and country tunes. I rarely took to the stage as did my brother, I preferred jamming with mainly older friends who had influences in country pickin’ in basements and living rooms. One was a gentleman who played with Rem Wall from the Green Valley Boys – remember them? I still have a custom made Alvarez Yari guitar which sleeps in its case because my fingers aren’t as limber as they used to be.
I always liked Zeppelin, Hendrix and King Crimson along with many other great bands but my main influences were country, jazz and blues.
Roy Clark appeared on many T.V. shows and several movies from the 1960s through 2009 and produced 51 albums of his songs. He was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2009. He was also honored by the Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame as Oklahoma’s Music Ambassador for Children and received 10 awards mostly for being instrumentalist of the year. He also flew small planes and jets through his life time.
Our winter weather advisory will expire at 10am this morning. We picked up another couple inches yesterday here in Otsego. Bittersweet opens today – they claim to have a 12 inch base of mostly man made snow. The snow guns have been going at night all week.
Our cold spell will continue through next Wednesday with temps in the 30s then warms up into the 40s. We have another shot of snow for tomorrow. December is looking to be another month of below normal temps.
Current seasonal snowfall is about 400% above normal! Incredible winter so far!!

Weather channel just put out it’s Winter forcast says the midwest for December below average and for January well below average…We will see!! INDYDOG14!
No surprise to me. Clearly we will be having a good winter season! Stick with the old farmers almanac and the RDB model for accurate predictions!!!!
The official snow fall for yesterday at GRR was 3.2″ and the total for the month so far is 8.9″ The average snow fall in November for Grand Rapids is 6.3″ but has ranged from 0″ (in several years) up to 31.0″ in 2014. It should be noted that a snowy November does not indicate that there will be a snowy winter. The current mean temperature at Grand Rapids is 37.3° and that is 5.8° below average. The last time it reached 60 or better was way back on October 14th Going back to 1892 there have only been 9 past Novembers that Grand Rapids has not reached 60 or better 2018 is now on the way to be number 10. Here is a list of the past 9 and a brief recap of that winter 1. 1907/08 aver temps snow 43.4″ 2. 1919 Cold then average snow fall 56.9″ 3. 1920/21 warmer that average only 35.6″ snow fall reported. 4. 1921/22 warm Dec ave J/F snow fall 44.1″ 5. 1925/26 average temps snow fall 89.5″ 6. 1967/68 colder that average 55.1″ 7. 1969/70 colder than average snow fall 84.6″ 8. 1976/77 Cold than average winter snow fall 70.8″ 9. 1997/98 warmer than average 59.8″. We shall see if we do or do not make 60 or better the rest of November and if we don’t how this winter will play out. It should be noted that 1968/69, 1976/77 and 1997/98 were El Nino winters.
Slim
The just updated CPC’s long range guess now indicates a chance of a colder but dryer December
http://www.cpc.noaa.gov/products/predictions/30day/
but a big flip to a dry and mild January and February
http://www.cpc.noaa.gov/products/predictions/long_range/seasonal.php?lead=1
That would indicate a typical El Nino flip at the end of December.
Slim
That seems to fit the Winter trend we’ve had the past few years. I don’t have the numbers (that’s your job! Ha), but it seems a large percentage of our snow falls before the end of December, then not much after that.
That will end up totally incorrect! Mark it down!
Interesting choice of words. You used the same ones back in April with regards to the upcoming Summer, then we all croaked in the heat for 5 and a half months.
Lol.
11 inches now of snow total this season off to a great start out at thee YARDofBRICKS…And it’s till snowing who would of thought…. INDYDOG14!!
And the best part is that what has fallen has virtually all melted already!
Early November ground is still usually worm the snow tends to melt ..our ground is still covered.. INDY!
