October 2017!!

We had a very interesting September here in west Michigan. The month started out cold with the first 12 days well below average in the temperature department and on the somewhat dry side. From the 13th on it became not only warmer but drier. And from the 15th to the 26th it became hot and dry. Here is were Grand Rapids stands for the month of September 2017. With 0.66” of rain became the 3 driest September in recorded history with only 1979 (trace) and 1940 (0.65”) being drier. The hottest day of 96° will go into the history books as the 3rd hottest September day in Grand Rapids recorded history with a 98° in 1913 and 97° in 1953 and 1954 being in 2nd place. Bottom line it was a very warm and dry September.
Now as we turn the page and look at October what can we expect?? Will it looks like it will stay on the mild to warm side of average (and that may continue for the rest of the fall and into winter as well) Anyway here are some averages and extremes for Grand Rapids for October.

Hottest day 89° October 1st 1897. Warmest mean 59.1° 1947. Coldest low 18° October 30th 1988. Coldest mean 42.9° 1925. Average mean 51.0°. Most rain 8.32” 1954. Least rain 0.03” 1954. Average 2.92” Most snow monthly 8.4” 1967 most snow one storm October 27th 1967. Last October with more than a trace October 2006 with 2.1” the least snow is 0 in many years past. Last year October averaged 54.7° and that is + 3.7° the warmest day was 79° on the 5th and the coldest low was 33° on the 25th Last fall it did not get below 32° until November 12th and last October there was no reported snow here in Grand Rapids. As for the first 32° low on average it is October 13th the first 30° low is October 21st and the average first 28° low is October 28th we shall see how that plays out this year. My guess is with the lakes being warm it will stay warm late into the fall season. The latest CPC long range guess supports it staying warm and dry for the rest of October.

and

I had thought that this years fall color change would be early but than now is not the case and in fact it looks like many leaves may stay on the trees well into October here is the latest report from the UP

Thanks Slim – I am not seeing any cold air coming this month or frost any time soon. I believe we will definitely surpass last months rainfall totals (we already have in some locations). We will have to watch some possible storms after sunset tonight – I will keep the forecast page updated as severe weather may come into the area. A narrow band may develop mainly from GR to the south with a strong wind frontal boundary. Another interesting long range feature may come into the area late next weekend into the 16th with heavy rain (up to 4″… Read more »
