Besides being the month of harvest there are a number of other observances and celebrations being held. October is adopt a shelter dog month. I have bought a couple dogs from breeders the past 20 years including the Aussie I currently have, however I have adopted many cats and a couple dogs from sources which couldn’t take care of them anymore. Many want to have cute puppies to raise which are fun and need a lot of training, some give up because they don’t know how or don’t have the time or patience to train them. Most dogs are smarter than we give them credit – like a child they need direction and persistence of the trainer. I have a two year old Lab who was very ill mannered when we adopted her, after a couple weeks of training she is a great dog. I have always had a dog in my life since my childhood and have learned to train them – I haven’t met a dog yet that couldn’t be trained to be social well behaved animals.
Keep in mind that our pets are mostly social animals and are members of the our families and should be treated as such. My pets are my children especially since we are empty nesters now and all our human children have lives of their own. Dogs are not meant to be put outside on a chain, I can’t imagine how I would feel having to spend my life chained to a post all alone. If you don’t want a dog in the house or don’t have time to care for them don’t get one.
Every animal has its own unique personality needing the love and attention every creature deserves. Many of you have pets and can attest to this – I know Slim has a couple cats – we have several including the two which are indoor cats – the rest wander the neighborhood taken care of by my wife and I and our neighbor who is a veterinary assistant. My neighbor and I have several insulated cat houses around our properties for them to keep out of the elements. In the winter we have a lot of cats inside with the dogs, the cats come and go as they please as they prefer to be outside animals no matter of the heat or cold.
We are here to care for Gods creatures, both inside and out. We feed the birds, possums and raccoons also. Its fun to open the door at night and see a raccoon family eating the cat food we always have outside.
Not many birds around now as they have all mostly flown south. It is a lot quieter in the morning.
We are looking at a wet period for this week with the exception of Wednesday when we get a break in the rain and temperatures will be around 80°. We will see showers and a possible storm today mainly north of I94. A storm could develop with the main threats being wind and hail. We are in the marginal risk area for storm development.
We have quite a temperature gradient today with temps in the 60s south of I94 dropping to the 50s north of US 10. The main area of rain is from Muskegon to Kalamazoo this morning moving west to east. Keep the umbrellas handy when you are out and about.
It sure is raining hard tonight. My little dog doesn’t like it at all. He is 12 years old now. MichaelV I really enjoyed your post on pets today. I too have had dogs all my life. When my kids were young we always had more than one. We also feed the birds and squirrels too. The butterflies love the flowers that are just for them and the hummingbirds. It looks like they have left for the winter. My kids all have households with dogs and cats.
Wet again…
Were is all this cold air some are saying is going to happen.. Looks like 80 on Wednesday and back into the 60s then back to 80 next week. If these are below normal temps bring it on. Lol !!

These nights have always fascinated me, when the temps keep rising all night! The strong overnight warm fronts are always fun!
So far October is well below normal for temps!
Lol! Not for long….
What’s been keeping you so busy Rocky?? For like the past week, you have been popping in with your after 9:00 pm one liner cold post and disappear.
Yes I have been very busy lately! Once winter hits I will be ready to ROCK n ROLL!
The rain will keep the temps down darn! INDYDOG14!
This is quite a warm front. 20° warmer just a couple of hours to the south.

Keep that GROSS cold out west!! This has gotta be killing the cold loving meteorologists on WoodTV, no matter how much wishcasting they do for cold temps in their long range forecasts, the WARM air just ends up dominating!!
53* out at thee YARDofBRICKS ..Who would of Fall thought! INDY!
My favorite October is the album by U2. I have it on vinyl.
Interesting tidbit Mark, Nine Inch Nails does a great cover of Zoo Station on Achtung Baby Covered, you should give it a listen! Be sure you have it on a good audio system, or listen with good earbuds, the soundscape is awesome!

Nother great Fall day we ended up with more cool Fall days in the last 2 weeks of September then I thought we would ….What little 70’s we have coming will feel like a heat wave …Get ready for a wet and below October maybe with some snow INDY!
For the last 2 weeks of September, the 17th through the 25th were all above well above average, including a 90 degree day and the rest at or above 80. The final week had several days at average and the last couple below average. So the final 2 weeks combined endend up well above average because of the double digit above average days and mild nights. You can look them all up here:

Great thoughts on pets. We have 4 cats that are like our children also. The human versions have left the nest but even when we were raising the kids, pets were a very important part of our lives. I am happy to say our children have carried that on and have pets of their own that are treated like family.
There is more color here than in Grand Rapids. This morning of course it is cloudy the reported temperature is 53. Here as back there looks cool and wet.
Also please take good care of your (furry) children (pets)
Slim
October 1st and there are 70’s and 80’s in the forecast. Will October be our 6th straight warm month in a row?
I’d say it’s a pretty safe bet!
Good morning. My wife and me are on a road trip and we are now in Niagara Falls NY. The US side is not as nice as the Canada side. I am a big baseball fan and today we are headed to Cooperstown.
Slim
Have a blast! Never been to Cooperstown (or Canton). Someday, hopefully.
Hey Slim, we were just in Niagara on the Canadian side in August! It was pretty hot when we were there, but we took the Hornblower cruise right up too the falls and the mist felt amazing that day! We had a great time! Not sure how much time you’ll be spending in the Niagara area though to do some of those things?
