Music & Warming Trend

I thought I would start an off weather topic on another of my favorite topics – music.  I have been an audiophile since I bought my first stereo system with lots of power and (gasp) a turntable.  Nowadays most music is purchased as mp3 files which are compressed stripped-down versions of recordings.  The best music, meaning the way it was meant to be heard was always vinyl or better yet direct to disc recordings with a high powered tube amp and a pair of high wattage speakers.

Before the advent of magnetic tape recording in the 1920s, all audio recording was “direct”. It was a notoriously difficult way to record, as the musicians and engineers had to record a complete session live (one record side at a time) without any serious musical or technical mistakes. If a mistake is made, there is no way of editing in post-production. You simply have to start again with new vinyl.

In the 1970s, the process became popular among audiophile circles—despite the inconvenience—as a way of bypassing the inherent noise and fidelity loss associated with tape. The audio quality gains were considered worth the hassle.

When you consider that each transfer of a recording from tape-to-tape will degrade the audio quality, it’s easy to see why this process gained traction in the pre-digital era. Engineers could avoid all the noise floor and tape saturation to achieve a cleaner final record with superior high-frequency transients.

For those of you who remember 8 track and cassette tapes, you may remember the background hiss associated with the movement of the tape across the tape players head.  The only unwanted noise from vinyl came from scratches on the surface of the vinyl if you weren’t careful in handling it.

I no longer have 8 tracks though I still have a few cassette tapes.  Most of my music is in CDs and digital formats.  When I converted my CD collection to digital I use the highest bitrate to keep the music as closest to the original as possible.  The downside is the large file format which is generally quadruple the 128k mp3 format.

We can expect more sun today which is always a welcome addition to our day.  Temps will be heading upwards beginning today on through the weekend.  We are hoping for temps to rebound into the mid-40s or better over the weekend with more sun and the anticipation of hauling out the grill to cook some food (I use charcoal which I believe is the way the good Lord meant for us to prepare meat for consumption).

We’ve only had eight nights this entire winter when it has dropped into the single digits, and only one night sub-zero and that was only -1. That is remarkable.

So the one who cheers on the phantom “big daddy” snow storms that never materialize is now complaining because the winds to cold? To funny! Just a gorgeous day out today. Who can complain about this??

Slim

I went out for a nice walk and while the sun is nice and warm the wind is cold. So while it it 34 here is sure don’t feel like it when one is walking to the south with that south wind.

Up to 34 here with 100% sun, the snow is dwindling. This time of year the sun will always win out, warming the ground with the higher angle each day. Snow should be totally gone within a day and back to bare ground in February again. How is this possible?

INDY
INDY

Currently 22* degrees out at thee YARDOFBRICKS Plainfield Township big question will we make 30* degrees today ?? Another below average day going into February from the post on here we would have very little snow and temps in the 40’s and 50’s lots red was showing ..We Have to admit the cold abd snow is winning out this month who knew??? Growing up, my folks had a Marantz hi-fi system with a reel to reel and a turntable. It seemed like everyone had a bar in the living room too – back when entertaining was a big deal. My folks had so many records from the 50s, 60s, and 70s. Good times, simple times.

Me too! I love long, warm, snowless winters like these!

Wow MV post on music put back a lot of old time memories. Way back in the day I played in a band (well we kind of played) and we did play at some local bars in Bay City and Midland. Our claim to fame was our copy of The Shadows of the Night “Gloria” written by Van Morrison. We also did songs (or tried to) by the Yardbirds and Rolling Stones. Little know to us at the time we stayed away from the Beatles songs.

There is definitely something brewing! Stay tuned for later updates! Rock n roll will never die!

Slim

1. yes there are some indications that there could be a system next week. Most of the current indications are that this will be to the east of us, but hey it could change. 2. As for mad dog Henry Margusty well I do not put a whole lot of confidence in his forecast 3. Mookie should be on here soon telling us how warm this weekend will be.

Michael: A question about yesterday’s post…
So what causes these Highs and Lows to form in the first place? Also, most surface analysis maps have several of each (forcasters talk about “double barrel Lows, for example, that are quite close together). This is confusing to me, and when these maps are put into motion, it gets even more confusing.
