The Winter Weather Advisory for the inland counties is set to expire at 9 am. This is due to freezing fog, drizzle and light snow which could make the roads slick.
Other than some areas of fog through tonight with a chance of light drizzle during the day the rest of the week looks to be rather uneventful.
For the Arctic cold weather lovers, it now appears the polar vortex we have been waiting for will descend upon Eurasia rather than North America. This will mean we will depend more on synoptic events rather than lake effect once again.
There is an article in the Washington Post about the polar vortex split and the stratospheric warming event.

Dangit, paywalled.
Great article and great news! I love the polar vortex! Bring it on!
Good read, especially “ the odds of the most severe cold outbreaks highest in Northern Europe.”
What’s this? On my drive home I had the wipers on because it’s RAINING! Someone just said there would be no January rain, yet here it is 37 degrees and raining. How can this be?
Interesting how the definition of a good snow pack has changed the past couple years. Used to be a good snow pack was 10 inches of snow or more. Now 1 or 2 inches is described as a good snow pack. I owned a snowmobile for over 30 years and there is no way I would ride it with a 2 inch “snow pack”.
Meanwhile up to 34 degrees here and the sun just came out. Just another way above average snowless Winter day. You can hear the snow pack melting.
I don’t care if we are 40 inches below normal in snowfall just keep 6 7 8 9 DDDDDD inches of snow on the ground through April so we can keep playing .. HAPPY NEW YEAR. INDY
Get ready for a backloaded winter! Over 10 weeks of winter left! The warm weather fanatics will be in for a rude awakening shortly after mid month! It is going to be a wild ride with tons of snow and cold coming! I love it!
Except you have no evidence for wishcasting. And you said the same thing two months and one month ago!
This is all a maybe or could be scenario for the second half of winter – with cold air dropping into Eurasia a what goes around may come around situation may come into play if the Arctic air rotates into North America. I have seen models point in both directions, so, for me, I am not overly excited at this point until I see otherwise in the next couple of weeks.
Yes the GFS model shows lots of cold air on the way starting Friday with snow systems to follow next week looks wonderful for winter fun in the state of Michigan I’m heading to Boyne mountain for my mid Winter break Sunday Boyne have lots of snow on the ground should be a fun time … HAPPY NEW YEAR INDY
How does this look INDY?

Let it snow let it snow let snow ….Looks great let’s keep it piling up ….. HAPPY NEW YEAR INDY
Is the polar vortex coming stay tuned.. HAPPY NEW YEAR INDY
Let’s hope so and I would say it will arrive near the end of this month or the beginning of Feb! It will be rock n roll party that lasts for weeks! Bring it!
As I said yesterday, GR is almost to the halfway point of winter in terms of snowfall. And yet only 7″ has fallen.
The back half of winter tends to see more snowfalls that quickly melt due to warmer temps and higher sun angles. What is it now? Only 7 weeks or so until meteorological spring? Winter is flying!
Did I miss how 2020 stacked up historically in regards to temperature?
I know it was GR’s 4th straight warm year and likely a top 5 or top 10 warmest year ever.
For years that have all of the data 2020 with a annual mean of 50.1 ended up being the 12th warmest here in Grand Rapids. Of 12 years 7 have been since 2000. At Lansing it was the 8th warmest on record in years with complete records with a mean of 49.9. At Muskegon with a mean of 50.7 it was the 6th warmest.
Slim
Thanks!
The polar vortex moving to Eurasia and still no lake effect snows? That is great news! The great snow drought continues as the deficit grows close to an inch per day. By the end of the week we will be at about 30 inches below normal.
Wow another winter weather advisory what’s that 4 out of the last 7 or 8 days but whoe’s keeping track lol.. Let’s just keep a good snow pk on the ground going into this weekend when the temps will be getting even colder and more snow systems moving in woo woo next week looks very winter like around here .. HAPPY NEW YEAR!! INDY
Most of the advisories have been for sleet/ice potential and not snow. Too warm!
