Forecast Discussion
- Light snow today, Friday, and Sunday A large latitudinal trough is dropping south across the Great Lakes. And with it comes a shot of colder air...h8 temps around -16c...and a short wave that will impact the cwa this afternoon. Current radar shows light snow showers mainly hugging the lake shore. However, as winds back the northwest later today and the short wave moves south over Lake MI, we`ll see snow showers increase in both coverage and intensity as lift within the DGZ develops. We don`t anticipate large accumulations, but 1-3 inches with locally higher amounts along the lake shore seem likely. HREF probabilities of more than 2 inches are 80% along the lake shore and 70% greater than 3 inches. Probabilities drop off quickly east of US-131 where a dusting to an inch are possible through tonight before the snow diminishes toward Thursday morning. Light snow is expected Friday as a northern stream trough absorbs a southern stream shortwave and moves across the Great Lakes. The bulk of the moisture will remain south of the Ohio River, but some will be able to advect north into Lower MI. A short wave dropping south from Canada within this long wave trough will help light snow develop Friday morning. We`ll be nickeled and dimed again with 1-3 inches across the cwa. Light show will wind down Saturday morning. A clipper will move through Lower MI Sunday into Monday. A surge of arctic air will accompany this clipper dropping h8 temps down to -18c by Monday morning. Initially, we`ll see light synoptic snow develop followed by lake effect. Northwest boundary layer winds will result in widespread lake effect snow across the cwa before it winds down Tuesday morning. Several inches of accumulation are possible with this system. - Continued near to below normal temperatures Highs in mid to upper 20s are expected through the weekend before falling to around 20 next Tuesday.
I was over on the NE side of town yesterday and was surprised that of the bare ground on Plainfield once I crossed 3 Mile there was once again snow on the ground. I still around 1″ in my area. I got dusting from todays light snow.

Love the fact that it’s snowing outside again keep the above average snowfall in tacked thank you!! INDY
The snow and cold just keeps coming and coming and coming! How is that possible! The warm weather nuts are in denial as usual!
I think this has been a pretty normal snowfall season for most of the area. Maybe just slightly below normal by a few inches, but nothing crazy unusual
I can’t recall one big synoptic snow. Can you?
No but I don’t believe any of the major reporting sites have significant departures from normal. Just slightly below normal snowfall, which can easily be caught up with a couple systems. If the systems keep tracking to our south and we just have dry air, then yes we will be well below normal by end of month
GR is above normal!
Looks good!
It sure does! No change in sight despite the warm weather no snow winter spin! The ignorance is off the charts!
Trying to remember the last time was we didn’t see a January thaw in January just below average temperatures as far as the eye can see who would of thought? INDY
The cold pattern is locked in with no end in sight yet! Get ready for more snow and get ready to ice fish!
Let’s gooo let’s gooooo!! INDY
GR is still above normal for seasonal snowfall and tons more is on the way! I love it! Absolutely Incredible!!!
After a below average snowfall in December, we are now below average snowfall for January. Dry seems to be the word of the winter so far.
Inland lakes are on the freezing way ice fishing will be rocken soon on top of that we have two snow systems on the way Saturday and Monday just addeding to the fun we called Winter….INDY
Yup! They are shaping up nicely!
Most locations in SNOW country are also above normal for snowfall and the snowfall potential is off the charts for the rest of winter! If you like skiing, snowmobiling, ice fishing, etc etc etc, get ready to rock!

What a winter! Still above normal snowfall and no change in sight! This despite people saying it looks like a dry January and it has been an easy winter! FACTS: we are above normal for snowfall, more snow and cold is in the short, mid and long range outlooks! This could be one of the better winters we have seen in a few years! Get prepared now! Wow, wow, Wow!!! Bring it! Incredible winter!!
I love winters, but it is a much different story inland of the western coast of michigan. I haven’t even plowed a single time this year. And we are still very dry, continuing the pattern that developed in late summer.
Good news – that pattern will be changing soon! Get ready for one snow storm after another! Rock n roll will never die!
I’ve only needed to shovel once. It wasn’t really necessary as the rest of the snow melted in 48 hours. We have maybe a half inch on the ground now. The grass is visible.
Glad I don’t live in Lansing! I keep getting snow every single week and with the cold temps it is great!
Outside of lake effect, there has been no winter! Wow!
