Michigan Weather Forecast for January 6

Good morning!  We have a temperature of 21° at 7 am this morning.  Yesterday’s high was 25° and the low was a cold 6°.  We had brief morning sunshine appearances, but it was a mainly cloudy day, especially along the lakeshore counties.

Our cold pattern with high temperatures only in the lower to mid-20s will continue over the next several days. No major winter storms are expected through the upcoming week. The next chance of any appreciable lake effect snow is Tuesday night and Wednesday and much of that may be confined to just the lakeshore counties.

North Forecast

Cold winter temperatures will continue chances of lake effect snow showers across the snow belts of Northern Michigan this week. Accumulations of an inch or less can be expected along the Michigan and Huron shorelines today before turning northwesterly this Tuesday. Snowfall on Tuesday favors areas along Leelanau and Grand Traverse Counties with accumulations of 2-4” with locally higher amounts possible by Wednesday morning.

U.P. Forecast

Light lake effect snow will continue to be the primary feature of the weather forecast for this work week alongside cold temperatures bottoming out near 0 Thursday morning.

SE Forecast

Cold temperatures through the work week. Light snow showers/flurries around today, but the light accumulations mostly confined to the Thumb region.

SW Forecast

Expect clouds and a chilly north wind today. A few breaks in the overcast may develop so some areas could see a period of sunshine.

2024 Climate Summaries

I posted climate summaries for southern Michigan last week, here are the summaries for the rest of the state.

202412ClimateSummary north

With an average temperature of 44.1 degrees in 2024, the Marquette area has broken its record for warmest year, surpassing the previous record of 43.8 degrees in 2012. It was a warm year across the Midwest, with virtually the entire region well above normal for average temperatures. While Marquette only eclipsed 90 degrees once this summer, the record warmth overall was driven by temperatures decreasing less overnight, with no record low minimum temperatures and 23 daily record warm lows set in 2024.
