Weather History
2006: A snow and ice storm strikes southwest Lower Michigan. From 6 to 12 inches of snow falls from Muskegon to Ludington, while an ice storm causes power outages and treacherous travel conditions from Kalamazoo to Lansing.
On December 1, 1974, 19.3 inches of snow fell in Detroit, the second-highest snowfall ever recorded in the city.
Forecast Discussion
- Lake effect snow showers today and tonight WNW flow lake effect snow showers will continue to develop today as a result of favorable delta t/s and increasing low level moisture in conjunction with a bump up of inversion heights to around 8 to 10 kft agl which are also favorable. This in conjunction with some omegas through the dgz will result in light to moderate snow showers with potential for accumulations of around one to four inches near to mainly southwest of a line from KMKG to KBTL. This notion is supported by most higher res guidance and the 00Z HREF 12hr snowfall PMM product. Therefore we issued a winter wx adv headline for Barry Kalamazoo and Calhoun counties from early this morning through this afternoon as snow showers are already occurring across this area attm and will continue through the day leading to hazardous travel conditions. In addition for this afternoon we expect lake effect snow showers with a Lake Superior connection to impact our far northern counties as low level wind fields veer more to the nw. So we have also hoisted a winter wx adv headline for Lake Osceola and Clare counties for this aftn through tonight. - Heavy lake effect snow across our lakeshore counties Monday An overall consensus blend of latest 00Z guidance shows potential for heavy lake effect snow to impact our lakeshore counties Monday as robust omegas through the dgz develop with deep moisture in place and favorable delta t/s. A sfc trof moving in from the nnw will also be a focusing mechanism for heavier snow to develop. Latest 00Z HREF guidance shows potential for at least 6 to 8 inches of snow across portions of our lakeshore counties with locally higher amounts probable. We expect narrower but intense snow bands to develop given weak low level winds with sfc winds gradually attaining more of a NNW flow component and becoming more unidirectional with height Monday afternoon after passage of the sfc trof from the nnw. Given the strength of omegas through the dgz snowfall rates will reach an inch per hour at times. 00Z HREF probabilistic guidance even shows potential for two inch/hr type snowfall rates from mid morning through mid to perhaps late afternoon and this notion seems quite plausible. A few locations near the Lake MI shoreline have potential to end up with snowfall totals of around ten inches to close to a foot. Given all this we have decided to hoist a winter storm watch for our lakeshore counties from early Monday morning through Monday night. Thx for extensive collab/coord on the fcst and headline decisions APX/IWX/WPC. - Risk for snow continues through much of next week For Sunday night into Monday night, a 700 mb wave drops in from the northwest. Low level convergence increases and the moisture depth lifts into the 700 mb level where temps will be around -20 deg C. Thus we are likely to see an increase in the snow showers then, especially near and west of US-131. It`s possible that we will need winter weather headlines for the passage of this system. The latest High Res Euro shifts the main snow bands offshore Monday night which does tend to happen when the winds swing around to the north. Not all models are in agreement that the winds will swing completely around to the north then. Then for Tuesday night into Wednesday, a longer fetch sets up as a southwest flow develops ahead of an approaching potent mid level wave. Moisture from Lake MI will feed into this system as it tracks through. The strongest low level convergence will be over northwest parts of the CWA. That`s also the region closest to the passing mid level support. Fairly high confidence for a widespread accumulating snow event exists with all models supporting this setup. Ensemble snowfall amounts have been trending up with this system as well. Beyond Wednesday, another surge of arctic air settles in behind the departing wave. Temps at 850 mb are shown to fall down into the -15 to -20 deg C range. This will generate plenty of instability to keep the lake effect snow showers going and accumulating. The northwest flow favors western parts of Lower MI for the most accumulations.
Currently we see are seeing a LES band extending from south of Muskegon through Battle Creek. The 01/12Z HREF seems to pick up on this feature with a NW-SE stripe of 4-6″ accumulations roughly along a Hopkins to Plainwell line in Allegan County by this evening. Other than this local enhancement, the forecast into this evening remains mostly on track. Main concern for this afternoon`s forecast update will be addressing the current winter storm watch for the lakeshore counties. Initial guidance suggests advisory level snow amounts many areas but substantially greater amounts from the Holland area southward, particularly in Van… Read more ยป
