Welcome to the first day of meteorological fall. Actually autumn is much easier to say and write. Autumn is the season of the year that is the transition period from summer to winter, occurring as the sun approaches the winter solstice. Meteorological autumn (different from standard/astronomical autumn) begins September 1 and ends November 30. Fall really begins September 23rd and is called the autumnal equinox as the Sun crosses the celestial equator going south.
We ended the month of August with 3.61 inches of rain total and 13.60 for the season – these are all Otsego totals recorded through CoCoRaHS.
It would be nice if the Colorado Climate Center where all this rain data is recorded could set up a daily high and low temperature database for the same stations which record rainfall totals. Their databases are easy to search for any date criteria.
We have light rain in the area this morning which will be around through early afternoon – high temps will be around 70 °. We will have pleasant temps Monday and Tuesday with highs near 80°. After that we will have a cooler period with a 70% chance of below normal temps. Normals are 74/54 for the beginning of September.
Tuesday bears watching with chances of severe weather in the forecast.
The scenario remains ominous for severe weather at this time for multiple reasons. The feature driving this scenario is a strong upper wave diving SE toward the Upper Great Lakes. This wave will be coming in right toward peak heating, which could feature temps well into the 80s with dew points in the mid 60s or so.
Below is the forecast map for Tuesday – the hatched area over Michigan is where the chances of severe storms are possible.
Dorian’s predicted path is ever changing, below is the latest from the NHC:
In other news, Justin Verlander threw his 3rd no-hitter. Can you imagine if we still had JV and Scherzer?
Yes instead of being in last place they would be in third place! Not much of a difference!
Good luck to all this Winter…an entire year below average prior to Winter’s onslaught. I remember mentioning the word “catastrophic” last May, while referring to Winter 2020. Hopefully, everybody spent this cold year preparing for what is on our doorstep. Again…here’s hoping everybody makes it through.
Sounds great!
Lots of hot coffee!

You know it Indy, this summer was great with minimal heat and only a few 90’s. Bring on Fall and then the snow!
I will do a summer recap later this week, but this summer had a cool June. Hot July and a near average August. With August departed of -0.1 that means at GR only July so far this year has been warmer than average.
