Yesterday, we had a high of 26 and a low of 20.5. Our meager snowfall over the past two days was .5 inches.
We will see some sunshine today more so in inland areas.
A round of light snow moves in for Friday with the best chances for 2 or more inches of snow along and west of 131. Another round of snow is expected Sunday with the lake effect looking likely for next week.
All of the significant snow is moving south of the state once again.
CPC Forecasts
Michigan Forecasts
Weather History
1930: A snowstorm drops from 4 to 8 inches of snow across southwest Lower Michigan.
1977: Record cold prevails during one of the most severe winters in Michigan history. Records include the 17 below zero at Lansing, 14 below at Grand Rapids and 8 below at Muskegon.
2015: Temperatures in the single numbers and lake effect snow showers create icy roads resulting in a 193 car pileup on Interstate 94 and both east and westbound lanes are shut down between Battle Creek and Galesburg.
On January 9, 2004, a band of lake effect snow formed over Lake Huron and dropped 4-6 inches of snow across the northeast tip of the thumb.
Also on January 9, 1997, significant ice accumulation on the wings of Comair flight 3272, crashed in a field outside Detroit near Ida, Michigan. The plane was en route from Cincinnati, Ohio. All 29 people, including 26 passengers and three crew members, were killed.
Forecast Discussion
- Lakeshore snow flurries this morning Lake effect snow is focused along a surface convergence zone which has nudged offshore, while WSW winds near the top of the cloud layer (around 5,000 feet) are casting flurries over land. Ridging, warming, and drying in that layer will further limit snow production today. A fair amount of sunshine is favored in mid and far southwest Michigan. - Friday area-wide snow accumulation with limited/minor impacts The next Clipper, and its associated reinforcing cold air spilling through the Canadian plains into the Midwest, will swing through Michigan Friday through early Saturday. Just ahead of it will be an extension of midlevel moisture from the southern US low undergoing gentle lift for much of Friday. About 60-90 percent of global ensemble members have QPF around 0.15 inches roughly near and south of Muskegon-Alma, enough for a widespread 1 to 3 inch snowfall between daybreak Friday and late Friday night. In the lower levels, southwesterly winds and confluence along a transient surface trough will provide a lake-effect contribution of moisture and lift just below the DGZ to Muskegon County and adjacent areas during part of the day Friday. This may increase snowfall rates in that area and the chance of over 3 inch totals. Then Friday night, the arrival of colder air underneath the 500 mb trough should support briefly heavier bursts of lake effect snow near and west of US-131 amid WNW surface winds. - Snow Sunday to mid next week A prolonged stretch of snow is likely, first with a surface low and "warm" air advection Sunday in response to a progressive shortwave trough moving from the Pacific NW to the Midwest, then lake effect snow is likely to be maintained Mon-Tue as a polar low settles into the northern Great Lakes region. Multi banded snow showers would be favored in west to northwest winds, and may carry well inland at times in the deep cyclonic flow. A relatively challenging time for impacts may be Mon night into Tue as the 500 mb height minimum swings through with 850 mb air around -20 C, supporting surface temperatures in the teens.

Nice write up from Blake:

The snow that has fallen in Grand Rapids has came and melted so fast that even with the over 35″ that official have fallen there has not been very much on the ground. And much of the snow fell with the roads so warm that it did not stay on the roads. Note there is a lot of snow on the ground up at The Soo but by the bridge just 50 miles away not much at all.

I like the fluffy nature of the snow, allowing shoveling, and keeping the snow blower in the garage. Lovely weather for my ice baths!
Yes, so far it has been a very easy winter. I have not had to use the snowblower yet this winter and have only shoveled once. And it has mostly made driving very easy as well.

The southerly storm track lately has kept it chilly but quiet. We had a dusting overnight. Cold 5 this morning, but zero wind.
Great CPC maps! The cold and snow will keep rocking all month long! Incredible winter so far! Keep the snow coming!
