Yeah – if you like the heat and humidity it will start building in today. Sunday will be the warmest day, with low temperatures that morning starting out near 70 then warming to low 90s by afternoon. The heat index by Sunday afternoon will reach near 100 degrees. Heat and humidity to this degree will cause stress on the body. Plan now to keep cool and stay hydrated. A round of showers and thunderstorms is also expected Friday night into Saturday, with only a few additional storms expected through the remainder of the weekend.
The best place to be is at the lake shore, laying under a sprinkler or stay inside if you have air conditioning. It is days like these I feel sorry for those who have to swelter inside their homes but then again I never bought an air conditioner until 1993. We used box fans up to that point to blow the hot air around. When I was growing up in the 50s and 60s I can remember times when we didn’t even have a fan, we would just swelter in place sleeping outside at night and just live with it. My old Aussie has become accustomed to our air conditioners, he likes to sleep right in front of them. Remember to keep lots of water out for the pets…
My first air conditioned vehicle was my 2004 Silverado (which I still drive), my wife’s 2013 Equinox has air conditioning. I drive my trucks until the suspension starts falling apart. I prefer trucks, I am on my fourth one. I will never buy another new one as they cost almost as much as a house now. I always preferred the older models which had roll up windows with a hand crank – I hate all the electronics they have now. My first brand new truck was a 1977 F100 which cost $6500. It had a 351M big block. After the warranty I built it up to 400 horse power – this was back when gas a buck a gallon. After I wore that one out I bought a new Ranger 4×4 for under $10000, then a F150 for $16000. I wore that one out and bought the Silverado which is still on the road.
Wow in looking at the first 13 days of this month one can only say it has been a very nice start to the summer season. So far this month the average high at Grand Rapids is 75.6° (76.6° is average at this date) and the average low has been 57.3° (55.3° is the average at this date) the mean for the month so far is just above average at +0.6° and so far the month has seen only 12 HDD (32 would be average) and only 35 CDD (44 would be average) We are looking at what should be a very warm to hot weekend. Hint this may be one of the hottest Fathers days in Grand Rapids recorded history.

One of the hottest Fathers Day in history after the hottest Memorial Day Weekend in history? Sounds about right!
Father’s Day will be a scorcher. Thankfully, we will be at the lake.
But just think by next week it should be back to near average.

This will be only about 2 weeks from our last stretch of mid 90’s in late May. So much for Indy and Rocky saying no more 90’s this summer!
In the past most years that had a reading of 90 or better in May had more that a average number of 90’s for the summer that followed. My guess is we will see several more after this weekend. Of note is that while some summers after a May with 90’s had a quick cool down in in August others did not so we will have to see what course this year has. There are indications that there may be a fast start to El Nino conditions late summer early fall that could lead to a cool fall and than a warm winter. Sorry Rocky and Indy.

Are you still calling for an average June or would you like to join me in the warm prediction camp now? 😉
Here comes the heat! WOOD has 84, 85, 90, 92, 90 (which may prove to be a bit conservative).
