I suppose if I had to put a label on it I would say March this year has come in more on the lamb-ish side. So, if the fables and lore do come into being we would have a stormy end to the month. Some would consider the snow and cold to be more on the lion side so I guess it is all a matter open to interpretation. With the gentle snow we had Friday here it looked more like lambs wool. Regardless we should see the jet stream retreat back northward by the end of the month (or sooner) which could issue in a stormier pattern bringing out the Skywarn people in force.
So far classes haven’t been set for our annual Shelbyville training for Allegan and Barry counties. I have created a Skywarn page with the booklet and other info related to the Skywarn training on this site. I talked to Sue over at Mezzo yesterday about hosting a small class in her coffee shop she said she would be happy to do so. They have a nice conference room in the back. If there is any interest here in getting together for coffee and weather discussion, let me know. They have WiFi so I could give an explanation of the Michigan Weather Center site and what you think of it and what you would like to see added. Perhaps we could make it a monthly get together.
Once again, I would like to see more commentary on the daily articles and not wish casting. We should follow Slims lead with hard data and explanations on the whys and wheres. I would like to think we are all friends here so the customary banter and fun stuff is okay as long as it doesn’t become repetitious.
My wife and I celebrated our 23rd anniversary quietly yesterday at home with all of our pets, all the kids and grand kids will be here today – our 11th grandchild is due this week, so the family keep growing. We have been blessed.
Our weather this week will be wintry and cold – not a lot of snow, perhaps an inch or two a day with the exception of the lakeshore counties where 3 to 6 inches may fall Monday night into Tuesday. The heaviest amounts should be right at the 131 corridor due to the brisk west winds. Fear not, temps will moderate by the end of the week….
Looking like winter this week.
Alabama got clobbered today. More than a dozen fatalities. 😢🙏
I hope this isn’t the start of an active tornadic season.
Still looking like an incredible week of winter weather! Bring it!

Who cares??? We’ve been getting WWA’s for 1 inch or 2 of snow all winter!
Congratulations on 23 years of matrimony! Here’s to many more.
Cheers!
Beautiful sunny afternoon today! It’s amazing how the March sun can even make a very cold day seem pretty nice.
Let’s be real here 8 inches of snow on the ground just about 2 months with good snow cover and 22* degrees out at thee YARDofBRICKS NE GR that’s 12* degrees below average this time of year!! Some weather facts folks no wanting or showing and batting on what’s coming down the road we can’t forget the sun shinning today lol have a great Sunday funday go Blue INDY!
Real? How come your backyard always has 50% more snow than what’s reported by the NWS? lol
Look at those temps starting next week and climbing from there! This looks to be the end of winter this week.
HAPPY ANNIVERSARY MV!
Winter wrap update.
While this has been for the most part a back-end winter here are some interesting bits of information on the winter of 2018/19 so far. Met winter at Grand Rapids was closer to average then one would think. The Average High for December 1st to February 28th at Grand Rapids was 32.8° (33.1° is ave) the average low was 20.3° (20.5° is ave) Snow fall was 54.1” (57.5” is ave) the greatest depth on the ground was 14” with since 1950 12” being the average greatest depth on the ground. And now for the season Grand Rapids total snow fall is at 69.5” So if we stand a good chance of getting anywhere between 75 to 80” for the season. Over the years there has been a large range of snow fall amounts here at GR with in just the last 30 years the range of between 116.0” in the winter of 2013/14 all the way down to just 51.2” in the winter of 2011/12. During that 30-year time the average was 77.4” Bottom line this winter will go down in the books as a near average winter.

A little late but Happy Anniversary MV

As this short and compacted Winter winds down, one thing that stands out in our area is the lack of a useable snow pack. By that I mean for snowmobiling. We live in an area surround by miles of connected fields, usually a great area to snowmobile in. But almost all of this Winter, we have not had more than a couple inches at any one time, making snowmobiling impossible. The really cold week we had a deep base for about a week, then the rapid melt destroyed it down to nothing again. We don’t have snowmobiles anymore, but our neighbors do, and they have gotten virtually zero use out of them this year. The fields around us are only half snow covered, and no snowmobile tracks at all. Been very quiet around the neighborhood this season. Current snow depth here ranges from 0 to maybe 1 or 2 inches of hard crusty ice.
For much of February there has been a sharp cut off in the snow depth as here in my area NW of Grand Rapids there as been a good snow pack for some time. Yes it can be said that much of it is hard crusty almost like ice but here there is a good 6 to 8″ of that and not to mention the snow piles.

It was a odd Winter this year with regards to snow depth. Usually there is more as you head towards the lake, but this year is the opposite with more inland. We have had very little lake effect compared to other years. In fact, if you were to drive to the lakeshore, there is little to no snow at all right next to the lake. Not a good season at all for Winter activities in this area.
When the nws says the heaviest snow may be right along the 131 corridor that is not a lakeshore county! That is Kent county and we are in the bullseye!
The map supports my theory of a very cold and snowy week in west mi! By Monday night we will have lake instability, higher inversion heights, a solid west wind and very cold temps! The GR area should get hammered with snow, low visibilities, slippery roads and very cold temps. School closing are possible by Tuesday! Get ready!
