Just Around the Corner

It seems like it was just yesterday that we started meteorological winter and now April is just around the corner. During April Grand Rapids has a increase of about 1 hour and 20 minutes of daylight. The average high/low increases from 52/32 on the 1st to 64/43 by the 30th In most years Grand Rapids will see its first 70° day in April (note only 3 years it did Not reach at least 70 in April. 1950, 1961 and 1907) of special note is that in 1907 March 23rd it reached 74 but it did not reach 70 again until May 12th GR tied that March 23rd record this year.   it also reached 70 in March of 1961 but did not reach it again until May 6th. There have also been many years that it has reached 80 or better in April and in 1899 the record high for April of 90 was reported. On the cold side it has gotten as cold as +3 on April 7th 1982.  In 1961 15.6” of snow fell and on 5 other years over 10” has fallen in April and in 2016 9.4” fell.

The current 30 year average mean for April at Grand Rapids is 48.0° The warmest is 53.8 in 1915 and the coldest is 37.6 in 1907. Of note in 1915 that April the mean was warmer than that May (53.3) was. The current 30 year average April snow fall is 1.8” the most snow to fall is 15.6” in 1961. The most snow on the ground in April is 10” in 1970. There have been a total of 9 years with no snow fall reported and 23 additional years with just a trace. The driest April was in 1942 with just 0.39” of rain melted snow, other dry Aprils were 2005 and 1899 with 0.77” 1915 with 0.85” and 1932 with 0.98” all other years April had a inch or more. The wettest April was in 2013 with 11.10” of rain and melted snow and that year the Grand River had major flooding. Grand Rapids also had major tornadoes on April 3rd 1956 and April 11th 1965. I will report more on those events in a later post.

I know there has been some back and forth on this year being a early or front loaded spring. Well here 1are some fun facts. In Grand Rapids recorded history there have been two years when March had a warmer mean than April. That happened in 2012 and 1907. So far the warmest it has gotten this year is 74 well here is a list of years when March had a higher, highest high than April 2012, 2000, 1998, 1995, 1967, 1961, 1910 and 1907. And there also have been years where April had more snow than March. That happened in 2018, 2011, 2000, 1961, 1952, 1936, 1938, 1927 and 1921.

It soon will be time to see how April 2021 plays out.
