The above pictures were taken in January 2014
We will not have a typical January thaw this year. In fact I looked back to 2000 to see just how often and by how much was there a thaw if any in those years
2000. January 2000 Grand Rapids had 15.7” of snow fall the month starts warm with a the warmest day of 57 on the 2nd there was 1” of snow on the ground that day. There were several small snow events and there was between 1 and 3” on the ground from 7th to the 24th and 4 to 5” and the month ended with 5” on the ground
2001 After a very snowy late December 2000 January 2001 started off with 12” on the ground and that was the most for the whole month. From the 4th to the 31st most of the days were warmer then average and while no one days of really warm (the high for the month was just 40 on the 30th) the snow went down from that 12” all the way down to just 1” on the 31st
2002 January 2002 started out with 9” on the ground but with many days in the mid 30’s to mid 40’s the snow was all gone by the 11th there was no snow reported on the ground until the 17th with 4” that that was all gone by the 22nd and the ground was bare until the 31st when 8” fell.
2003 That January started out with no snow on the ground. It did snow and there was 1” on the ground by the 5th but a high of 47 on the 7th wiped out. 2.2” fell on the 10th and there was snow on the ground the rest of the month.
2004 As in the year before 2004 started with no snow on the ground and in fact on the 2 and 3rd the high here in Grand Rapids reached 59° Late in the day on the 4th it snowed and there was snow on the ground for the rest of the month reaching 15” on the ground on the 24th
2005 January 2005 was kind of a up and down month the month started with no snow on the ground with the temp reaching 49 on the 2nd on the on the 5th we had snow and there was 6” on the ground. On the 12th the high jumped all the way up to 55 and then 52 on the 13th and the snow as all gone. GR had 3” on the 19th and then 12.3” on the 22nd
2006 Like this year so far January 2006 had very little snow on the ground the 1st snow fall of more than 1” did not fall until the 20th and there was 5” but that was all gone by the 27th and the month only had 9.6” of snow fall.
2007 January started out mild with no snow on the ground There was 1” on the ground form the 8th to the 10th and the snow did not stay on the ground until the 15th and there was snow on the ground the rest of the month.
2008 This January started out with 7” on the ground but that was gone when the temp shot up to 57, 63 and 56 on the 6,7 and 8th Snow did start falling on the 11th and reached 7” by the 23rd
2009 started out with just 1” on the ground and after 4.7” on the 7th there was snow on the ground the rest of January the highest for the month was just 36 on the 31st
2010 This January started with 5” on the ground reaching 7” by the 11th there was a good thaw that started on 23rd with highs of 37, 49 and 37 the snow pack fell to 1” and that is what GR ended the month with.
2011 The first day of 2011 the high reached 55° and that was by far the high for the month as it did not get any warmer then 34 the rest of that January and there was snow on the ground from the 2nd to the 31st
2012 January of 2012 had 3 “thaws” so while the month had 27.0” of snow fall the most on the ground at any one time was just 6” and 12 days had no snow on the ground reported
2013 Just like 2013 January 2013 had several thaws and the most snow on the ground at any one time was just 5” a high of 58 was reported on January 29th and then 54 on the 30th
2014 January 2014 had snow on the ground on every one of the 31 days and in fact the least amount of snow on the ground was 5” on the 1st and again on the 14th that came after the high of the month of 43 on the 13th the most on the ground was 18” and for the month Grand Rapids had 41.9” of snow fall.
2015 January of 2015 had snow on the ground on 29 of the 31 days of January the 1st with a T and the 3rd with 0 were the only days without some snow cover. The most was 10” on 9th thru the 12th that fell to 3” after the high for the month of 43 on the 17th
2016 January 2016 was a January were Grand Rapids had 20.8” of snow fall but had many thaws between snow falls and the most on the ground at any one time was 6” on the 13th
2017 In a way January 2017 was a lot like this January the month started off with no snow on the ground. There was some snow between the 5th to the 10th but a high on 47 on the 10 and 43 on the 11th took care of the 4” that were on the ground. The ground remained bare until the 30th when GR reported 2.4” and another 3.3” on the 31st giving GR the most on the ground for the month of 4” There was a high of 61 on the 21st
2018 In January 2018 there were 2 thaws the month started out with 7” on the ground and became 9” on the 8th before thaw #1 when the high reached 58 on the 11th The snow was replace with a 3 day total of 4” by the 16th that 4” was wiped out 5 days in the 40’s Highs of 52 and 50 were seen on the 26th and 27th
2019 As of Friday January has only seen 1.6” of snow fall and the most on the ground was a reported 0.8” on the 2nd We shall see how much snow Grand Rapids gets today. Also we will have to see just how long this cold will last will be just a couple of weeks or will it last into Spring with a cold March and April? One thing seems clear we should not have a traditional January thaw this winter (or will we)

January thaws are the best! February thaws are great too!
That was easy snow to push. All my plow drivers from Rockford to cutlerville, from cascade to jenison, all reported between 2 and 3.5 inches this morning. A steady snow but very little
Flakes size. Now we wait to see what Tuesday brings!!!!!
What’s the name of your plow company? I live in the area of your plowing ..I’m serious thinking about putting a plow on my truck and doing uber plowing on the side call if you want your driveway plowed ….INDY!
I prolly shouldn’t give out that info on here, somebody might give my company a fake bad review, lol. If you have the time and are flexible there is a big need for it and a great way to earn extra money, well maybe not so far this year, but on the norm it’s a great way to earn extra money.
Well good luck the rest of the winter season .. I’m thinking after Tuesday we will get some lk effect snows going and yes I have been seriously thinking about it .. Be safe out there… INDY!
16* degrees out at thee YARDofBRICKS NE GR. Temps are crashing would not surprise me we go below 0* tonight coldest night of the Winter season …Crank the heat ….INDY!
18* and ‘official’ 5 inches of snow here in Otsego
We are in a stretch of great winter weather!
Oh yeah, after 37 out 39 days of above normal temps and around an inch of snowfall, this one day in a row of cold and a little snow is a real nice stretch! Probably go back above normal temps for midweek, so enjoy this long stretch!! LOL!!
What a storm. I picked up nearly 4 inches of snow along with wind a cold! Awesome!
Lol!! Can see the desperation if you’re wetting your pants over a few inches of snow and calling that a massive storm!! Thought you were skiing in TC all weekend?
Very glad the real snowstorms are still staying well off to the south. It can just keep going right on that track! Got some nice sunny Winter days coming up! Nice and sunny now with a few inches of powdery fluff out there!
Facts !
Wind chill advisory kicks in at 9 p.m. tonight to 10 a.m. tomorrow 0 -15 below zero stay warm INDY!
The snow has ended and the sun is out. Total snow fall here at my house from this event is 3.0″

Michigan is now 2-14 at The Kohl Center. It’s tough to win on the road in the B1G.
Probably the first game I had to yell at the tv this season Michigan showed nothing today sloppy play Wisconsin misses more shots under the basket out of any team I haved watched this season and Michigan could not take advantage of that can’t win them all and what a loud crowd Bring on Minnesota next …INDY ..
Michigan is so good this year. They will go deep into March.
Just came back in for round two of snow removal. I’m guessing we’re close to 4″ total. Probably the lightest snow I’ve ever seen.
Spartys and wolverines going to be fun coming up next month …The state of Michigan should be proud of there college teams way better then our horrible pro trams lol..INDY!
Yep, the Kohl Center is always a tough place to get a win, kinda what I expected today, Michigan has never had much success there no matter how Wisconsin’s season is going.
🤘
Looks like GR had 1.5” today and about a half inch last night for a whopping total of 2 inches from this “storm”.

I despise January thaws! Give me dead solid cold and snow for 4 or 5 straight months!
Another great write up Slim! Man you are thorough!
Just over 2 inches here. Tiny, grainy snow that doesn’t really pile up at all like lake snow does. Amazing that it took 50 days into Winter to get a snow cover on the ground. Might not ever see that again, or maybe it will happen again next year!
It is nice to see some real winter weather! Clearly a major pattern change and hopefully the cold and snow will at last at least the next 8 weeks!!
Matt Kirkwoods “Wood tv 8” showed a map 45 day map below temps to March 1st I’m thinking we could be on our way you think this is cold wait to next weekend ….INDY!
WOOD has been predicting cold and snow since the fall. They are kind of a one song band in that regard.
Yep, I’d swear Rocky is a meteorologist on their staff!
WOW I JUST GOT BACK FORM SNOW COUNTRY AND WHAT DO I FIND? SNOW country in the GRR area! We have picked up 3.5 inches and still snowing!! It is nice when the naysayers are wrong. A few on the blog were stating probably just an inch for GR and why the WWA! Great call by the NWS and INDY’s prediction of 3 to 5 inches in GR area! INCREDIBLE!
Thank you a lot of studying no sleep and wanting Snow lol..Get ready for more INDY!
We have just shy of 3″. In looking at the area totals, it appears the forecasters did a fine job.
15* degrees out at the YARDOFBRICKS feels like 1* degree pretty cold for 11am stay warm INDY!
I was just reading a post about some dangerous and life threatening cold air coming a week from now what a change of pattern . Definitely have to monitor that one ..Stay warm INDY!
Good morning. Took a snow fall measurement and here at my house NW of Grand Rapids I have ….drum roll please 2.5″ of new snow fall. This is the most snow fall here since November 26th when just over 4.2″ fell and the 2.5″ on the ground is the most since November 26th when there was 3″ on the ground. The current temperature here at my house is 15.8 with light snow falling.

Good snowy morning MV’S best what a beautiful night that I enjoyed out in the snow most of the night and my total’s sound pretty right…We are setting up a wonderful foundation for the more snow we have coming in sight …. From out in the snowy YARDofBRICKS with 3 or 4 inches or more Have a wonderful Saturday and stay warm …Go Blue INDYSNOW!
Thanks Slim – I think we had our January Thaw through most of the month so, yes not typical. Nothing typical about this winter for sure.
At 6am we have 26* in Otsego with 3.25 inches of snow thus far. It would probably be a good idea to clean up the snow before tomorrow when the frigid temps move in….
whoops – I meant we had a temp of 19*
