Once again the snow cover will begin to disappear – it has already compacted and settled ready to turn to mush. Great Lakes ice cover is 27.6% much greater than last year and water temperatures are in the low to mid 40s. The screen captures are from yesterday showing the ice along the Lake Michigan shore line.
Our next system will come through in the Sunday night/Monday time frame. The track of the low pressure system is still a bit uncertain and the models have trended a bit south from yesterday but this would still leave us in a mostly rain situation turning to snow later Monday for southern lower Michigan. The models have been showing an ice event in the northern lower and snow in the U.P.

Fair weather with moderating temperatures will continue into Saturday then rain will move in on Sunday and Monday. Colder air with snow and snow showers will arrive Monday night into Wednesday.
Patchy fog is also expected due to the high boundary layer moisture and melting of any lingering snow cover. It is not completely out of the question that a few thunderstorms may develop along and just ahead of the sfc low/cold front. We left it out of the forecast at this time mainly due to weak instability.
Colder air will move in on the back side of the departing system and in conjunction with wrap around moisture behind the departing low will cause rain showers to change over to snow showers Monday night. Snow showers will continue Tuesday with potential for light accumulations of around 1 to 3 inches as suggested by a consensus of latest medium range guidance. A high pressure ridge will then build in from the west and bring fair wx Wednesday and Thursday. Temperatures will average near normal for this time of year Tuesday through Thursday.

I guess winter must be over – right? Must be having above normal temps the rest of winter – right? No more snow storms – right? >>>BREAKING NEWS>>> No winter is not over and we are still ABOVE NORMAL for seasonal SNOWFALL in GR currently! INCREDIBLE! It is only January 19th and we will be getting absolutely hammered with SNOW in February and March! Remember the original prediction was for a back loaded winter! Remember? Who would have thought?
Hopefully your predictions are as accurate as last year! I would be happy!
Another week without any big snows. The biggest daily snowfall in GR for January has been a measly 2.5.” And there’s certainly no big snows on the horizon either. This weekend the average temps begin rising into spring!
