January Summary 2/4

We have 27° at 7 am this morning, 7° colder than this time yesterday.  Yesterday’s high was 45° and the low was 32°.  Considerable clouds can be expected today but there will be some sun sometimes. It will be on the cold side of normal today with highs in the 20s. A sharp north wind of 10-20 mph will make it feel colder. Freezing rain and snow will spread into the area Wednesday evening and continue into Thursday morning. Snow will be a trace to 2 inches near/north of I-96. Freezing rain most likely near I-94.

January Summary

Here is the January 2025 Climate summary. Due to some equipment issues at Lansing, the temperature and Precipitation had to be set to missing. The month was colder than normal with higher snowfall along the lakeshore.

Weather History

1838: An ice jam on the Grand River causes flooding of much of Grand Rapids during early February. Several people had to be rescued from flooded neighborhoods and at the fur trading post.

1996: One of the coldest arctic outbreaks of the 20th century sends the thermometer down to 17 below zero at Grand Rapids and 19 below at Muskegon, both records for the date.

On February 4th 2018, a period of accumulating snow spanning two days came to an end. Most of Southeast Michigan saw 4-6″ with a peak observation of 6.1″ near the town of Peck.

Also on February 4, 2006, the city of Fairgrove in Tuscola County received 10.0 inches of snow. The snowstorm lasted from the 4th to the 5th.

Also on February 4, 2007, arctic air plunged over the Great Lakes Region on strong winds. High temperature at Detroit was only 8, Flint was 4 and Saginaw was 5 above zero. The arctic air mass remained in place through the 6th.

Forecast Discussion

- Less Potential For Significant Freezing Rain Wednesday Night

Overall short range guidance trends continue to shift further
south with the axis of relatively heaviest freezing rain Wednesday
night. It now appears that the axis of relatively heaviest fzra
will occur near to mainly south of the MI/IN border in closer
proximity to the warm front across the lower OH valley region
where there will be more in the way of forcing/isentropic upglide
and lift.

Based on short range guidance trends we have therefore lowered
forecast fzra amounts to around a tenth to fifteen hundredths of
an inch near to south of I-94 and less than a tenth of an inch
north of I-94. These amounts may need to be tweaked down lower if
the model trends of the past 24-48 hrs continue.

- Windy Thursday

It will become quite windy Thursday as the pressure gradient
between the strengthening sfc low moving across Ontario and high
pressure ridge over the northern Plains strengthens. Latest 00Z
ensembles suggest peak wind gusts could reach around 40 mph but
as such staying below wind advisory criteria.

- Mix of Precipitation Likely Saturday

An overall consensus blend of latest medium range guidance
continues to suggest that a low pressure system moving ene across
the lower Great Lakes region will bring a wintry mix of pcpn to
our area Saturday. It is too early to get into too many specifics
but at this time we expect a mostly snow even north of I-96 with
potential for snow/sleet/fzra near to south of I-96. This system
will be rather progressive in a fast zonal upper level pattern by then

From NWS GR:

“Confidence grows with and Impactful Storm Saturday”

“Ensemble snow amounts for Grand Rapids show a wide spread of values so there is still a lot of uncertainty with the details, but greater confidence for higher qpf values for this winter system exists.”
