January 16 Forecast

We expect a slight warming trend over the next few days with highs in the 30s  before a frigid airmass moves in Saturday night.  Sunday will feature highs in the mid-teens falling into single-digit readings next Monday and Tuesday for our coldest air of the season and more lake-effect snow.

Weather History

1949: Temperatures reach record highs in the mid to upper 50s for the second consecutive day across southwest Lower Michigan.

1972: The arctic air holds on for one more morning of record lows as Grand Rapids falls to 16 below zero and Muskegon tumbles to 11 below.

On January 16, 2009, the region was in the middle of a five-day arctic outbreak. Detroit set a record reaching -15 degrees. Flint was as low as -10, while Saginaw was -6.

Forecast Discussion

- Snow mainly early this morning then milder through Friday

A clipper system in conjunction with sw flow moisture advection
and several upper level shortwaves will combine to bring a quick
hitting round of light snow early this morning. However snow
accumulations with this system will be rather light with only
around an inch or less east of the US-131 corridor and one to
three inches near to west of US-131 due to some lake enhancement.
A few higher amounts to around 4 inches are possible mainly across
portions of our lakeshore counties.

Several upper disturbances will bring additional lighter snow
showers today but any additional accumulations from mid morning
through the afternoon will be very light at less than an inch.
High temps will reach the lower 30s and then into the middle 30s
Friday as winds back to the south and strengthen. A cold front
will bring some light snow with accumulations of around an inch or
less mainly to our se fcst area (se of KGRR) Friday night.

- Bitterly cold with snow showers Sunday through Wednesday

Persistent caa begins Saturday with early morning high temps in
the lower 30s that will fall through the 20s and then into the
teens through the day with brisk nw winds. H8 temps will continue
to plummet to around -24 C by 00Z Mon and to -28 to -29 C or so by
Mon/Tue. As such high temps by Sun will struggle to reach the
upper single digits to lower teens. High temps Mon/Tue will only
reach the lower to perhaps middle single digits above zero with
the core of the arctic airmass firmly entrenched by then.

Lake effect snow showers are expected in this time frame as well
and the fine diamond dust snow crystals will limit visibilities
at times. Given the progressively colder and drier arctic airmass
which will be in place snowfall microphysics by Mon/Tue will
favor columns/plates and smaller dendrites limiting potential for
significant accumulations. Nevertheless travel impacts are
expected Sunday through mid next week as a result of snow showers
and reduced visibility in snow showers in conjunction with the
bitterly cold airmass in place by then.

I like this map! The warm bits creeping into SE Michigan have me worried. But we need moisture!

Yes the above average precip sounds good! At least the ground is frozen and we have snowpack to do stuff instead of muddy, sloppy conditions.

Some of us live outside the narrow lake effect bands. I wish I did! Very little storms= very little snow.

I recorded 1″ of new snowfall overnight and there is now 5.5″ of snow on the ground here in my yard. The overnight low here was 15 and it is now up to 22 with some light snow falling. After a warm up through early Saturday it looks to turn much colder and that will be the big weather news for next week. I don’t expect too much snow but in places there could be some very small snow flacks falling and that could affect visibility and with the cold salt will not work well.
