Hello Fall

Yesterday Slim bid farewell to meteorological summer and gave us a lot of great data on the fall season (great post Slim).

The NWS will post the summer data today or tomorrow (maybe), I can post the rainfall data for Otsego for the summer months.  We have gone 14 days with only .12 of an inch of rain, which gave us 3.27 inches for the month of August (all in the first two weeks).  We ended up with 12.48 inches of the summer months.

Our highest temperature came on August 26 which was 94.5° and the lowest was 42.6° on June 11 at 6:11 am.  Our highest dewpoint was 83.2° on August 27.  In my humble opinion, this was a perfect summer all in all.

Weather History

1953: A heat wave that began in late August continued into September, with record highs of 97 degrees at Grand Rapids and 96 at Lansing. The 95 degrees at Muskegon tied the record high for the month there.

2009: September begins with temperatures more typical of October. Lows include 41 degrees at Muskegon, 36 at Ludington, Hersey and Baldwin, and 35 at Harrison. Cadillac fell to 32 degrees for the second morning in a row, and Leota in Clare County fell to 30 degrees.

2018: Four tornadoes occurred within a two-hour period during the evening. The first was a brief tornado that snapped trees near Gull Lake in Barry County. This was followed by a tornado with winds estimated at 100 mph that destroyed a manufactured home at Morley in Mecosta County. Two other tornadoes took down trees, some of which fell on houses, in Jackson and Clinton Counties.

Forecast Discussion

- Cooling Trend Through Labor Day

In this cooler and drier weather pattern, the main weather-related
hazard will be dangerous waves and currents on Lake Michigan today.
See the Marine section for more details.

The base of a synoptic upper-level trough is passing through the
northern Great Lakes this morning. A surface cold front with a
distinct wind shift can be tracked northwest to southeast through
Lower Michigan this morning. 850 mb temperatures will drop several
degrees C through the day, and full mixing from surface to 850 would
support highs in the lower 70s in central MI and mid-upper 70s in
southern MI, on the cooler side of normal for Sept 1. The air will
be drier and more comfortable with dew points in the 50s and 40s.
There may be a few clouds passing through but overall the forecast
soundings are quite dry. Lows tonight drop into the 40s in many
spots, with a chance of some patchy ground fog as winds just near
the surface go light.

- Dry into Mid Week then Chance for Rain Late in the Week

Surface high pressure will remain entrenched across the Great
Lakes region from Monday night into Thursday. Ridging aloft will be
in place as well which will results in high confidence in a dry
forecast. The pattern begins to change late in the week as upper
troughing digs towards the Great Lakes from the Northern Plains. A
cold front is forecast to move through the area Thursday night and
Friday when rain showers and a few thunderstorms will move through
the area. Into the weekend the evolution of the pattern is much more
a low confidence forecast as the operational models have different
solutions. The ECMWF is progressive with the front, while the GFS
develops a second low in the Plains. As of now we have chance pops
(30-50%) in the forecast for the end of the week and isolated pops
(20%) over the weekend.

- Moderating Trend in Temperatures Through the Week

Temperatures will slowly moderate this week to back to near normal
levels by Wednesday and Thursday. Highs will be in the lower 80s
both days. After the frontal passage however, temperatures will
tumble once again. Highs will cool into the 60s next weekend which
will be a taste of fall.

I agree. This has been an amazing summer. Not too hot. Not too cool. Plenty is precipitation. Everything is still lush and green. Quite a few storms too.

I hope everyone is having a great holiday weekend. We’re at the lake. Yesterday and today have been perfect.
