Happy Thanksgiving

Travel conditions should be fine throughout the day.  The snowshowers will ramp up tonight well after sunset and continue through the weekend.  Stay safe!  I am sure we will see some sort of advisory posted by the NWS later today.

Colder air arrives Thursday night, ushering in scattered to numerous lake effect snow showers. Accumulations and winter driving conditions are likely.

Hazardous Weather Outlook

.DAY ONE...Today and Tonight

Lake effect snow showers may create challenging travel conditions
with slick roads at times starting tonight.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Friday through Wednesday

Lake effect snow showers will create challenging travel
conditions with slick roads at times Friday through the weekend
and even into early next week at times.

Weather History

1955: Bitterly cold arctic air is firmly entrenched across Lower Michigan. The high temperature at Lansing is only 15 degrees, after a morning low of 6. Meanwhile, a foot of lake-effect snow piles up at Muskegon.

On November 28, 1991, a winter storm moving through the Great Lakes brought snow, sleet, and freezing rain across the Flint area, leaving 4.4″ of snow by the 28th.

Forecast Discussion

- Lake effect snow showers increasing late tonight through Friday

Light lake effect snow showers will gradually develop today as low
level winds back to the nw to wnw and h8 temps fall to -8 to -10
C. This will yield delta t/s in the upper teens. Just a few tenths
of an inch of snow accumulation at most will occur today mainly
west of US-131 and closer to the Lake MI shoreline as a result of
low inversion heights and weak omegas in the dgz and lack of
moisture in the dgz.

Lake effect snow showers will ramp up late tonight through Friday
as deeper moisture moves in through the dgz and h8 temps fall to
-12 to -13 C yielding delta t/s into the lower 20s.

An overall short range guidance consensus blend shows potential
snow accumulations of around 1 to 3 inches from tonight through
Friday afternoon in our favored wnw flow snow belt regions.
However some localized higher amounts in the 4 to 6 inch range
are possible where the heaviest les bands setup and are most
persistent. Thx for collab/coord on the no winter wx headline
decisions (for now) APX and IWX.

- Cold northwest flow regime with lake effect snows into next week

High confidence remains the overall pattern through next week with
persistent upper troughing across eastern Canada extending into the
NE CONUS. Cyclonic flow and occasional shortwave troughs progressing
through the mean flow will result in lake effect snow showers of
various intensity from Saturday through next week.

Although the details are not clear cut and ensemble spread still
exists, confidence is increasing that a clipper will come though
with synoptic and lake enhanced snows on Tuesday into Wednesday.
Chance POPs at that range could be increased to likely if that
signal remains, It still appears likely the cold northwest flow
regime persists through the week as the polar jet remains over or
just south of the Great Lakes.
