Welcome to 2025!
Yesterday we had a high of 39° with snow showers most of the day with trace acculations due to the warm and wet ground.
The new year will bring colder air and the risk of snow showers of the lake effect variety. The main area of lake effect will be along and west of US 131 where up to two inches of snow will fall. Snow showers will continue into Wednesday night, followed by additional light snow Friday and possibly late Sunday into Monday as clipper systems move through the area. A cooldown trend is underway with highs falling into the 20s over the next several days.
Weather History
1876: The year begins during a three day spell of record warmth. Lansing hits 65 degrees, after setting a record of 70 degrees the day before.
1964: Arctic air sets record lows across Lower Michigan on this New Year’s Day. The temperature falls to 15 below zero at Grand Rapids and Muskegon hits 9 below.
1985: A severe ice storm struck southern Lower Michigan as a layer of ice up to one-inch thick downed tree limbs and power lines. There were three deaths and eight injuries directly related to the ice storm. Over 430,000 electrical customers were without power, some for as long as 10 days. Total damage was estimated at nearly $50 million.
On January 1, 1876, the new year was a nice welcome for Detroit when it came in with a record-high temperature of 65 degrees.
Also on January 1, 2008, a snowy start to the new year when a compact, but potent winter storm hit southeast Michigan. Detroit received 4 inches of snow, and Saginaw only had 2 to 3 inches, but in between a heavy band of snow left 8 to 16 inches. Storm totals included 8.6 in Flint, 10.5 in Ann Arbor, 12 in Brighton, 13.2 in White Lake, and 16 inches in Clarkston, Lake Orion, Dryden, and Capac!
Forecast Discussion
- Lake effect snow showers increase today A negatively tilted upper level trough extending from a large upper level low over central Canada will extend across Michigan today. That trough will continue to bring colder air over the region. As noted in previous discussions, the Lake temperatures is around +6C. That trough will bring temperatures at 850mb around -12C. That will fuel lake effect snow showers that will continue to ramp up through the daytime today. Those lake enhanced showers will infiltrate through southern Michigan bringing an inch or two of snowfall across portions of southern Michigan, especially West of US 131. The large upper level low that brought snow to the Lansing area on Wednesday will move through the Mid Atlantic and New England today into tonight. That low will flatten the trough and ending the instability generating the lake effect. - Surge of colder air late Thursday brings more snow The before mentioned upper level low will settle of Eastern Canada and drive another trough through the Great Lakes late Thursday into Friday. That will once again induce lake enhancement to bring snow showers to Michigan, primarily along and west of the US 131 corridor. That flow will bring much colder air. By Saturday morning 850mb temperatures could be as low as -19C. So light snow will be possible through Saturday with temperatures dropping precipitously through the weekend. Lows should drop into the teens by this weekend.
HAPPY NEW YEAR TO EVERYONE. i HOPE YOUR NEW YEAR IS BLESSED WITH GOOD HEALTH,, LOVE, AND HAPPINESS.
