July 4th
I know that the NWS will have a post as to the records on July 4th (I will also toss some weather history for the local area) but what was the weather like on the day the declaration of independence was written.
Thomas Jefferson recorded in his weather journal for July 4, 1776, that he woke up to find that the temperature at 6 a.m. was 68 degrees. At 9 a.m., the temperature was up to 72 degrees, and at 1 p.m. it was 76 degrees. Similar temperatures were recorded that day by Phineas Pemberton, a member of a prominent Philadelphia family. He also recorded that on July 4, 1776, the wind was shifting from the north to the southwest and clouds were increasing in the afternoon. So how dose that compare to the average temperature at Philadelphia on July 4th The current 30 year average H/L at Philadelphia is 87.5/68.8. So that morning was close to the current low but the afternoon reading of 76 was much cooler than the current average afternoon reading. The record high at Philadelphia for the 4th of July is 103 in 1966 it was 100 in 1919 and it has been 90 or above in 43 years. The delegates were wearing heavy suits and many of them had on wigs. So they may have been Glad that it was a cool day that year. But it may have been humid. The coolest high at Philadelphia on July 4th was 65 in 1978.
Here at Grand Rapids the current 30 average H/L for the 4th is 83.1/62.0 The record high for the 4th was 100 set in 1897 and again in 1911. It reached 99 in 2012 and 1921 In 2012 the low for the day was just 78. The coolest high was very cool 64 in 1970 and the record low was a crisp 45 in 1972. Some warm lows for warm fireworks the low for July 5th 1902 was just 82 it was a warm 76 for a low on July 5th 2012. The coolest night for fireworks at Grand Rapids was likely in 1972 when the low for the morning of the 5th was just 44. 1903, 1977, 1966 and 2019 all had over a inch of rain fall. This year will be the 1st time in 3 years when the high has not reached 90 or better as the high last year was 90 it was also 90 in 2019 and it reached 94 in 2018 the low on the 4th has also been in the 70’s the last 3 years. Over all at Grand Rapids there have been 24 years when the high has reached 90 or better on the 4th in 5 years it did not reach 70 for a high.

Yes 100 degrees in Zeeland and then this winter they will never see more than 2 inches of snow for every snowstorm! Incredible!
