Halfway Through Summer

I believe we have more than made up for our cooler wet spring with the heat we have seen this summer thus far.  We haven’t had much in the way of severe weather and the main headline has been the sunny days and the 90° days we have had thus far.

The CPC continues guessing the heat will continue into August – we have a slightly better than 50% chance of above-normal temps and equal chances of above or below normal rain.

Today will once again be in the mid-80s and the humidity will build back in for the weekend.  Heat indices may reach the 100° range tomorrow bringing about a very uncomfortable day to be outside unless you are going to submerge yourself in a lake or pool.

The is the NWS discussion by Bill Marino this morning:

Saturday we have the approaching Pacific system on the northern stream. This puts southwest Michigan in strong southerly flow ahead of the approaching cold front. Typically on days like this we get deep mixing and our actual high temperature can be more than 5 degrees warmer than our models suggest it will be. It would seem to me we will have a fair amount of sunshine and with the deep mixing I could still see highs in the mid maybe upper 90s. We are being slightly conservative with our actual forecast just to be on safe side. If we get highs around 95 or more, we could have heat index values over 100 degrees. My suggestion of highs near 95 inland are based on the 1000/925 thickness equation I have developed, and have used for over a decade. So far this month had not missed a forecast high at Grand Rapids by more than 2 degrees on any day. My equations is giving me 95 for Grand Rapids from the 00z model run but it has had that number for the 00z run from last night too. It had 81 yesterday and it got to 82, it had 85 the day before and it got to 86, as an example, to show this equation does work nicely.

Just like the warmth and far below average snow we got last winter! Going for a repeat this winter! Outstanding!!!

Slim

It early July 2020 “heat wave” was kind of long by Michigan standards but with lower humidity and cooler nighttime lows it was not as bad as some past heat waves. Note Michigan is not known for heat waves.
