A beautiful day yesterday with another in store. It is days like today which I look forward to and cause me to get out of bed looking forward to a good day. I don’t spring out of bed like I did 10 years ago however I do get up with anticipation and not trepidation. I have neurological ailments which cause me pain and slow me down but I don’t let it cause me to curl up into a ball and give up. I don’t have the gumption I had a few years ago – I do what I can and praise the Lord I am still able to do them. I keep in mind there are many in worse shape than I am and pray for them rather than myself.
I bring these things up due to my mother who is in her 80s being in the hospital with a broken hip. Broken bones in the elderly is bad news to say the least. We have decided she will undergo surgery which is scheduled for today – the procedure is to relieve pain and give a better quality of life for what time remains. When we reach our golden years and retirement from the workforce we are reminded of our mortality and rejoice we made it thus far and can enjoy the time remaining to us to the best of our ability.
We often assume our lives will head in a certain direction until outside forces dictate otherwise – this is where our gumption and faith in higher powers move us to keep going forward. When we recognize we are one part of over seven billion others it should give us humility knowing we all suffer pain and have the same disease which is sin.
If we are aware of the place we are standing at any given moment and look around us and above and below there is recognition we take up a small place in the grand scheme of things. This was one of my favorite topics to talk about in the church when I would open the service for the pastor. We can be one small light in the world with whatever joy, kindness, respect and goodwill we can bring to others. These attributes can spread to those around us making that light brighter and spread happiness. One small act of kindness can be contagious…
Another sunny day is in store though a bit cooler than normal we anticipate things to warm up midweek. The smoke from the Alberta wildfires could bring the hazy milky skies later in the day and a beautiful sunset. The fires have burned 577,341.90 hectares (1,426,643 acres) as of yesterday.
Here are the summaries of the storms on June 1st and the May climate summary:
For Barry’s post below:
It rained 24 put of the 31 days here in May. Not a lot of rain, just very often.
Interesting for sure. One of those things that doesn’t seem to add up, but it did.
Nice day today!! Perfect for getting Spring chores done. We have not ran our furnace lately but we do have flannel sheets still on the bed. Right now I still have a few windows open and it feels refreshing. 🙂
I hate to admit it, but we ran the furnace again last night …
Probably tonight to ..Jeff it’s cooling off fast .. INDY!
60* degrees out at thee YARDofBRICKS NE GR 715pm June 3rd kind of chilling for this time of year.. Better close the windows tonight again …INDY!
Here is a complete list of the number of days so far this year that several locations have had 80° or better. And the warmest so for this year. Grand Rapids 0 days 79. Lansing 2 day 81. Muskegon 2 days 81. Kalamazoo 3 days 82. Battle Creek 3 days 81. Holland 1 day 80. Jackson 1 day 80. Detroit 4 days 87. Flint 2 days 84. Saginaw 1 day 81. Alpena 1 day 83. Sault Ste Marie 0 days 74. Gaylord 1 day 80. Looks like the warmest temperature officially recorded so far this year is 87 at Detroit It should be noted that there have been past years where it did not reach 80 in May at Grand Rapids but only 1997, 1983, 1947, 1924 and now 2019 where it was this late before the 1st 80 day (officially) at Grand Rapids.
Slim
Yep something fishy going on at GR airport it seems. Traverse City hits 83 and 84, Gaylord hits 80, Muskegon hits 80+ twice, and yet GR can’t hit 80? Hmmm
If you have a issue with something going on at the NWS office official readings you should take that up with the NWS office. Yes it can be warmer or cooler just a few miles apart. But like I said if you (or anyone else) has a issue with the official reading they can take that issue up with the NWS.
Slim
Ya right it must be the deep state! What a joke!
There are plenty of NWS locations that seem to be warmer or cooler than their surrounding locations when I look at neighboring observations. There are definitely lots of factors to a certain location as Bill says.
Going on 8 months now no 80’s in GR in the record books..INDY!!
No sign of any extrem heat like a few said several months ago the start of summer would be .. Interesting..INDY!
Very odd stat for May is Lansing being below normal for rain. Seems almost impossible with all the rain we’ve had. Hit 80 here again on Friday. What is up with the GR thermometer??
Poor GR. Many Michigan locations have had multiple days in the mid to upper 80’s already! Makes zero sense how the heat goes all around GR but not GR, itself.
It is a conservative area. Maybe they are manipulating the thermometer to try to say warming isn’t happening.
Now that is pretty funny!
Lansing has made amends so far in June as they have more rain so far this month then GR or Muskegon.
Slim
Holland has only had one official day of 80 or better so far this year and that was 80 on May 18th

I was referring to my PWS and ones in the surrounding area as well as the Vriesland airport behind our house which now has a weather station set up.
It rained 24 put of the 31 days here in May. Not a lot of rain, just very often.
June…furnace on. Life, in the Southern Arctic.
Definitely no furnace at my house. Perfect 69 this morning inside. You’re doing something wrong.
Yes it was 61 degrees in the house and the furnace kicked in! Incredible!
Michael – prayers that all goes well for your mom – I’ve had a hip replacement since 2002 and it’s been a wonderful thing! Regarding the temps – I turned the furnace on this morning to take the chill out of the air. I remember other summers that simply refused to “start”; but once it finally warmed up, it turned HOT.
I attended my granddaughter’s HS graduation yesterday – it was held at Kresge Auditorium at Interlochen, which is an open-air pavilion (meaning the cement environment absorbed all the winter’s cold and it was downright cold in there yesterday!) I felt sorry for all the girls who were wearing skirts/dresses, when the temps were more like “insulated leggings and Ugg boots”…..LOL! I guess when you live in Traverse City, temps in the low 50’s feels “warm”?
Here at my house I had a overnight low of 38° of course that is not official and will not count. The official low at Grand Rapids last night was 40° that make today’s low tied for 3rd place on the all time coldest lows for this date the record low is 38 set 4 times the last time was in 1977 and in 2nd place is 39 set in 1945 and then 40 set in 1956, 1946, 1929 and now 2019.

Crazzy my daughter #2 is on a class trip to Michigan adventure today she’s bum the water park is still closed due to the cold temps I told her to bring a sweatshirt chilly there especially close to the lk shore ..INDY!
It’s interesting that Detroit has hit 80-87 four times already this year. Even Traverse has hit 83 and 84 degrees!
Looks like the heat starts building after today. Get ready for some more above average temps!
Heat is starting to build? Only seeing low to mid 70’s as far as the eye can see .. Heat building not in Michigan not yet anyways lol..INDY!
WOOD has 79-82 degrees from Thursday onward.

It is now written is stone we will see how this plays out over the next 6 to 7 days. But looks very average for early June as the average H/L is 74/54 on Tuesday and 77/56 by Saturday.
Slim
If you call 2-4 degrees above average as being “average,” then every month this year has been about “average” so far.
The weather was truly perfect this past weekend! Lots of storms and lots of sun with temps near 70. Doesn’t get much better than that.
10 to 16 days out the the blue is on the map! Colder then normal temps across the great lks we maybe breaking the longest stretch ever without a 80* degree day in Grand rapids pretty amazing.. I thought it was going to get hot!!! Have we ever had a summer with out a 90* degree day Slim?? INDY!!
Yes Indy there have been 2 1951 and 2014. I agree with you that Grand Rapids could have the latest first official 80 day in recorded history
Slim
Thanks Slim possible 2019 gets added to the list we will see days start getting shorter 3 weeks away . .INDY!!
Yes 2014 was awesome!
So far June is below normal for temps! Will this be 6 months in a row? What a stretch!
