The Great Waldo Flood

I was watching the conditions deteriorate in Kalamazoo and photos coming in from Waldo Stadium as the water keep on rising yesterday morning and afternoon. (Image is by Kaytie Boomer).

It was so bad pieces of the turf began to bubble up.  Needless to say the home coming game was cancelled with hopes the ground crews can get the field ready for today.  They really have their work cut out for them.

I lived in this area back in the late 70’s and I can’t remember seeing anything like this.   It would have been an interesting game had they played splashing about in the pond like porpoises.  The Kalamazoo area picked up around six inches of rain.

Kalamazoo City officials reported that several streets were closed Saturday afternoon and evening

  • Crosstown Parkway, between Park Street and Stockbridge Avenue
  • Dutton Street, between Portage Street and Jasper Street
  • Park Street between Stockbridge Avenue to Forest Street
  • Park Street at Crosstown Parkway

At 8:07 p.m., the following streets were added:

  • Riverview Drive at Bridge Street (curb lanes closed)
  • Vine Street from John Street to Portage Street
  • Crosstown Parkway between Park Street and Portage Street
  • Stockbridge Avenue from Burdick Street to Rose Street
  • Crosstown Parkway at Howard Street
  • Walnut Street at Portage Street
  • Lake Street Between Burdick Street and Portage Street

Rescuers were called to the area of Howard Street and Crosstown Parkway about 4:50 p.m. on a report of an 80-year-old man stuck in a car, with water up to his waist.

A lightning strike at a residence in Schoolcraft, in the 600 block of East Lyons, causing a fire. There were no injuries reported.

We picked up 4.15 inches yesterday (through midnight) and .31 thus far this morning in the Otsego/Plainwell area. Our rainfall total for the year is over 41 inches with 7.61 for this month (thus far) surpassing our .58 from last month.

Grand Rapids picked up around two inches with lesser amounts to the north.  I am not seeing any more deluges like we had yesterday for the rest of the month as the models are showing an inch or less through October 31st.  The GFS is starting to show hints of a frost for most of the state at the end of October.

A deepening low pressure system will continue to track through Lower Michigan today. The heavy rain that fell on Saturday and through early this morning will pull away from the region leaving behind flooding for parts of far Southwest Lower Michigan. Strong wind gusts will accompany this storm and power outages are possible today.

Waldo Stadium is open for business – they pumped over a million gallons off the field and it is a go for the game. I do wonder where they pumped all the water to???

Sheesh, we’re feeling sort of inundated around here: 6.19″ yesterday plus .4″ so far today bring us a storm total here at Gun Lake of almost 6.6″. Apparently that’s nothing compared to the Mattawan area….

We have picked up about an even 2.50 inches so far since yesterday, and it is still pouring out now as I type this. Winds have really picked up now, getting gusts to 40mph. Still feels very mild out yet though at 67 degrees.
Looking forward to tommorow as we are going to a Red Wings game in their new arena. They are off to a great start! Go Wings!
