It looks like the first Father’s day in the United States may have held on July 5th 1908 in Fairmont. West Virginia at the Williams Memorial Methodist Episcopal Church. This being a local event did not muster much national attention and it soon faded. Another attempt was made in 1910 in Spokane, Washington by Sonora Smart Dodd. This happened in the Spokane YMCA on June 19, 1910. The celebration was to be on the third Sunday in June. A bill to accord national recognition of the holiday was introduced in Congress in 1913. but Congress resisted, fearing that it would become commercialized. During the 1920s and 1930s, a movement arose to scrap Mother’s Day and Father’s Day altogether in favor of a single holiday, Parents’ Day!
In 1972, in the middle of a hard-fought presidential re-election campaign, Richard Nixon signed a proclamation making Father’s Day a federal holiday at last. Today, economists estimate that Americans spend more than $1 billion each year on Father’s Day gifts.
With Father’s day being observed on the third Sunday in June the date can fall between June 15th and June 21st I started my Father’s day weather history with the year 1950. In going back to 1950.

Last year the high was 76 and the low was 63 and 0.55” of rain fell.

 

Wow the first 15 days of this month one can only say it has been a very nice start to the summer season. So far this month the average high at Grand Rapids is 76.1° (76.8° is average at this date) and the average low has been 57.3° (55.4° is the average at this date) the mean for the month so far is just above average at +0.6°  and so far the month has seen only 12 HDD (33 would be average) and  40 CDD (49 would be average) We are looking at what should be a very hot weekend. And this looks to be one of the hottest Fathers days in Grand Rapids recorded history. So turn on the AC if you have it. If not get out and go shopping or take in a movie. Going to the lake shore would be another good bet.

  1. It sure has been a very hot and humid day. We did sit outside tonight for a short time but the air is really thick and not a breeze. Sunday is suppose to be be hotter.

    1. We usually have a fire outside on Saturday night, but not in this heat! We chose to sit in the air conditioning and watch a movie instead.

  2. A bunch of hype for the heat wave starting today and it wasn’t even hot! What a joke! It was a nice summer day with temps around 84 degrees! Hype hype and more hype!! Ridiculous!

    1. 113 with a 72 dewpoint at work today, believe me, it was HOT. Try working 12 hours in that and then tell me it’s not hot

    1. That sounds disgusting! The low for where we are going in Colorado tomorrow is 41! I can’t wait to get out of this air, it is sooooooo thick right now.

  5. I have a temp of 74* now out at thee YARDofBRICKS and light rain witch we need more then the heat INDYDOG14!

  6. Just got drenched by a quick, heavy downpour while mowing the back 40. Oh well, I won’t have to hose off the tractor.

  7. This little thing they are calling a heat wave reminds me of driving through Ceder springs before you know it your through it! Tuesday high of 78* is not far away!! INDY!

  8. Storms to the NW and SW of Grand Rapids and here at my house it is dark to the NW and SW from the storms so far only 0.12″ of rain here. The current temperature is 73° I see the NWS has lowered the high for today to the upper 80’s I have to wonder if even that is too high for today? I guess it depends on when the rain ends and the skies clear out. My guess is mid 80’s and very humid both late afternoon and over night.

  9. I’m with slim big Thunderstorm complex over us right now common sense would tell me we need the sun for the hot temps right? Still a comfortable 71* out at thee YARDofBRICKS! INDYDOG14!!

  10. We had some thunder and heavy down pours over night and again this morning. Looks to be a great day to do things inside. I hope all the Dad’s out there have a great Father’s Day.

  11. There continues to be a lot of thunderstorms to the west and northwest of Grand Rapids. So far here at my house only 0.08″ of rain fall. Have a current temperature of 70° with a lot of clouds. Have to wonder if the rain will hold today’s temperatures down some.
