With most other warnings I would be out getting photos and videos for the site. Storms have become a rarity around here the past few years, almost as rare as excessive heat warnings which have been more common in the southwest of the U.S. . If I understand the documentation Slim kindly provided a link to yesterday our chances of this type of extreme heat and humidity for Michigan are one half of one percent. I was talking to a gentleman yesterday about having to work outside in this kind of weather – he smiled and stated if he didn’t do it someone else would. He treasured his job and enjoyed it no matter the circumstances. In my younger days I worked on a farm during the summer for a dollar an hour working 60 to 70 hours per week – big money for a teenager in the early 1970s. After high school I worked in paper mills and construction, both very hot jobs. On days like today you drink lots of water and grin and bear it. I don’t have to now so I sit in my air condition home or office during these hot spells – if something needs to be done outside I do it in the morning or evening.
Our warning lasts from today through Sunday. Saturday and Sunday mornings will be very warm and humid with lows only making it down into the mid 70s. This continuous stretch of heat and humidity is expected to be interrupted late in the day Sunday with a chance for thunderstorms. Some storms could be severe with heavy rain. Most of the coming week will remain hot with highs frequently around 90. Thus summer is now in full bloom. I am not seeing any break in this pattern until July 7th when we may get back into the 70s which will seem cold after this extended heat wave.
A mild summer day…finally.
At 10:30 PM it is 82 and feels like 96. Very hot and humid out there. I have the a/c on. They are saying hotter tomorrow. 🙁
Still 87* out at thee YARDofBRICKS impressed for midnight.. INDY!
Took a twilight cruise on the pontoon. Still hot. We caught 20 bass in one hour. A couple of really nice ones. Half were keepers full of eggs. Late spawn this year.
Wasn’t too bad today! I got in 18 holes this afternoon! Just stay hydrated and find some shade and no problem!
Health tips provided by Rocky ? Who what of thought. 🙂
Rock On Jeff!
85 with a feels like temp of 96 at 9 pm in Otsego 🙁
Yeah, it’s still very warm out at this hour. Tomorrow i am staying in, i will melt otherwise. 😉
97* heat index 104* out at thee YARDofBRICKS.. Not a bad backyard reading kicking off this major heat wave!! INDYDOG14!!
In your car doesn’t count either. Lol. Make sure to turn the air on and that temp will go down. 😉
Ready 2—Get My KICKS…..@ Thee YARDofBRICKS!
INDY is right, we were at Lowe’s on Plainfield a few hours ago and the thermometer on our car said 97!
Off to work I go. It is going to be 3 hot days at the ball park. The latest temperature at GRR is 90 with a DP of 72 good for a reported Heat index to 98. Off to our SW it is even worse in Illinois the DP’s are in the upper 70’s with a couple of 81’s reported the same in Iowa. Missouri has DP’s in the mid to upper 70’s and in Wisconsin the range is in the low to upper 70’s and here in Michigan the range from 73 at Benton Harbor to 64 at Copper Harbor. There are even a few in the low 70’s in the UP so we are in for a humid night.
Slim
Holland beach is paked not even noon yet .. enjoy the heat wave INDY!
Deb brought up a good point. In many of our past years that had a “Heat wave” it was very dry. At this time most areas of the midwest have had a lot of rain that is one of the reasons it looks to be so humid. But that is not really the case here in the Grand Rapids area. While we did get some rain on Wednesday here in GR it was only 0.35″ and it has been dry here since June 10th and it looks to stay on the dry side for the next several days that could add to the heat later on if it stays dry.

I am a weather amateur, so my question is this. I know we are under a Excessive Heat Warning, but I don’t see anything about an Air Quality… do these just go hand in hand or am I missing something?
Stay cool!!!
Seems like there are many warm to hot days that have a quality alert and or ozone action days they have to do with pollution in the air. Not sure why they happen more on warm summer days it could be that the air becomes more stagnant but here in Michigan we generally have a breeze. Of course a Heat warning is for heat. I dont see that we are under both but as to why? I am not sure.
Slim
When I typed this morning I didn’t see the Alert for Air Quality. So I was ahead of the game I guess. LOL!!! Thanks for the info!

Thanks… just didn’t see it before…
My pleasure. The Air Quality Alerts seem to always be on the lake shore, but I do not know why.
“This will be the beginning of an extreme HEAT WAVE! HOT weather starts today and runs through next weekend.” WOOD
Just a 2-3 day heatwave though, right? 😉
Yes, At this time using the official definition of a
Heat Wave
“A period of abnormally and uncomfortably hot and unusually humid weather. Typically a heat wave lasts two or more days.”
With Mondays current official NWS foretasted high of 87° while warm for Michigan standards it would not be abnormally hot as many summer days are in the upper 80’s. So unless Monday becomes warmer this would only be a 3 day Heat Wave.
Slim
LOL And the next 4+ days would be an entirely separate heat wave then? Not buying it…
You got it. One item of note is that in many past heat waves the hottest day came late in the Heat Wave will have to see if this happens this time around or not.
Slim
That makes sense. It tends to be hottest right before the passage of a cold front.
Exactly Slim! Keep the facts coming! You ROCK!
HYPE!
After a warm May and a warm June, the first week of July will be one of our hottest ever (and could continue into the second week of July as well). Unless we get a very cold snap later in the month, my bet would be on a warm July happening around Michigan.
In 2012 Grand Rapids starting on June 27th to July 9th had highs of of 90,97,89,89.91,96,96,99,101,104 and 99. A one day break when the high was 86 and then had highs of 89,90,94,91,97,99, and 91. As for July 2018 at this time my bet would be for increasingly dry and warmer that average with a slight cool down possible later in the month.
Slim
Yes, I believe 2012 was the hottest start to July ever and we aren’t too far off that.
1921 and 2012 were about the same. Hot start and hot all month.
Slim
An oddity from 2012 – I remember paddling the Thornapple River, normally the water is coffee-colored due to tannins from swamps; but in 2012, it was as clear as could be because the swamps dried up! However – the dried-up swamps allowed some sort of biting fly to breed, and it carried a disease to deer that made them crazy-thirsty; and then they died along the riverbanks. By August of that year, any river south of US-10 was a “River of Death” with all the deer carcasses 🙁 I sure hope we don’t get THAT again.
It looks like the next 10 days or so will be one of our hottest stretches in years. WOOD now has 7 out of the next 8 days 90+. The abnormally high heat indices will be even more rare.
2013 and had a 8 day string and 2012 well July was just hot that year.
Slim
Yep so hottest in at least 5 years probably!
I got my walk in early today. At this time here in Grand Rapids it is not all that bad out. The temperature when I left for my walk was a cool 64° and the current temperature at my house is 69 the last report at the airport 66 with a DP of 64. One thing that kind of surprised me is that I was the only one out running/walking even in the park. Only a few others walking their dogs. That is odd because it was nice and cool even if a little humid. BTW I work outside I start today and tomorrow at 4:30 and Sunday at 12 noon. I expect the next 5 days to be really hot our at the ball park.
