Dry Through Thursday

We will be entering another quiet weather pattern through Thursday then another system will move in at the end of the week bringing rain and snow.

U.S.A and Global Events for March 7:

1717: A series of snowstorms between February 27 and March 7 blanketed the New England colonies with five or more feet of snow. Click HERE for more information from the New England Historical Society. Click HERE for additional information from Weather Historian Tom Moore.

1947: On March 7, 1947, not long after the end of World War II and years before Sputnik ushered in the space age, a group of soldiers and scientists in the New Mexico desert saw something new and wonderful in this grainy black-and-white-photos – the first pictures of Earth as seen from an altitude greater than 100 miles in space. The image below is courtesy of NASA.

1970: Last near-total eclipse of the sun in Washington, DC, in this century. Sun was 95% eclipsed. A total eclipse passed over NASA’s Wallops Station (now Wallops Flight Facility) on the coast of Virginia. Click HERE for more information from NASA.gov

1997: The worst was finally over for states hit hard by the flooding Ohio River. The river crested on the 6th at Louisville, Kentucky, 15 feet above flood stage, after topping out at nearly 13 feet at Cincinnati, Ohio, and more than 7 feet at Huntington, West Virginia.

2018: A teacher was struck by lightning outside an Ocean County, New Jersey middle school during a rare weather phenomenon known as thundersnow. Click HERE for more information.

Forecast Discussion

-- Mild weather through Thursday --

The last vestiges of the upper level trough that brought nuisance
snowfall last evening continues to move eastward. High pressure
will build into the region today with sunny skies as clouds clear.
Temperatures will be around normal today through Thursday.

-- Potential snow Friday --

Clouds will begin to overspread the region through the latter
half of the week as the models are in fair agreement of a
negatively tilted upper level trough moving through the Great
Plains Thursday evening into Friday. That upper level trough will
only aid a mid level and surface low pressure system. The upper
level trough is still tracking to become a closed low by Friday
morning as it moves through Wisconsin with upwards of 0.5 QPF
associated with it. Lower Michigan is still set to be on the
northern end of the mid and sfc low with -2C to -6C 850 mb temps
to be over the region Friday morning. Strong PV anomalies
associated with this as well as low level jet from the east at
850mb will fuel instability and snowfall generation. Max
temperatures for Friday will top out around the mid 30s along the
I 94 corridor with highs at or below freezing northward. It is
moving through during the daytime but given the track and the cold
air, we could see a wet slushy snowfall Friday. In the wake of
that lows exit cold air should remain over the region into the
weekend.

Despite the nonstop posts everyday about Winter weather, today is yet another bright, sunny, and mild early Spring day. Like Slim pointed out below, lakeshore areas are running nearly 3 feet below average in snowfall, but all the comments continue to be about GR.

Yes lakeshore areas were not as bad as the 131 corridor. This was the snowiest winter I remember here besides 2013-2014

Nonstop posts about winter weather? It is a weather blog after all and still winter. Once spring arrives the discussions on here will change.

I was referring to the same posts over and over several times a day, even when the weather outside is beautiful. As for still Winter, on the calendar yes, but most weather record keeping goes by the meteorological seasons.

According to the AWSSI, it has been a very mild winter here in Southern Lower Michigan.

No subzero temps. Very little long term snow on the ground. Virtually no ice. And very warm temps.

It sure has been a wild winter and no sign of any let up. We have seen, bomb cyclones, blizzards, multiple WSW, multiple WWA, freezing rain, well above normal snowfall, multiple school closing days and now plenty of snow chances the entire month of March! Wow the wow! Let’s keep this rock and roll party cranked up at least the rest of the moth!

Yesterday we woke up to around 1” of wet snow on the ground. That snow melted during the day as the official H/L at Grand Rapids was 41/33. For today the average H/L is 41/24 the record high of 72 was set in 2000 and the record low of -3 was set in 1986. The record snow fall of 5.2” fell in 1935. The rest… Read more »
