Drop in Humidity

This summer will go down in history for its hot and humid days and of course the storms we have had.  In opposition, I wonder if this coming winter will be cold and snowy.  Another thing of note is the power outages we have seen this week.  When I lived in Maine I don’t ever remember a power outage due to most of the lines being buried underground.

Here in Otsego, we had two times in the past 25 years where we lost power for three to five days.  We had other power outages which generally were back in service in a day or less.  It isn’t fun but you change the way you do things, like cooking outside on the grill, catch up on your reading and play board games and cards.  My generation knows how to cope with these things as we didn’t have a lot of the modern conveniences growing up as do millennials and beyond.  The worse part is having to throw away frozen food and clean out the fridge when they go bad after a couple of days.  This is why I bought a generator a few years ago.

Consumers Power has 370 crews out repairing 4100 outages which are affecting 159,000 customers this morning.  Luckily with the weather cooperating for the next several day’s power should be restored to most by today or tomorrow.

The story today will be the return to more comfortable humidity levels and several days of sunshine to dry out those areas affected by heavy rain this week.

Love this:

The temps currently in Holland and Detroit are only one degree apart. However, the dewpoint in Detroit is nasty 70 and Holland is a lovely 54.

Like the first line of the post today states, “this Summer will go down in history for its hot and humid days”. Nothing to argue about there.

It was very humid here this past week. Grand Rapids had dew points in the 70’s for 7 days in a row. Now down in Fort Myers while the dew points were similar to what we had here in GR the highs and lows were higher in Fort Myers. The warmest it has been this month is 87 the highs in Fort Myers has been in the mid 90’s every day and the lowest it has been this week has been 75 and there have been two nights with lows of 77.

Great summer with zero heat waves! Incredible!

Pretty sure this past week has been miserable for about everyone. Heat index readings day after day in the upper 90’s and even over 100 is just flat out hot.

“Heat wave” could be considered a subjective term. Per NOAA, “A heat wave is simply a period of unusually hot weather that typically lasts two or more days. The temperatures have to be outside the historical averages for a given area. A couple of 95 degree summer days in Maine, for example, might be considered a heat wave, but a couple of 95 degree summer days in Death Valley would be pretty unremarkable.” “Unusually hot weather” is also subjective. For arguments sake, let’s say that unusually hot is a temperature ten or more degrees above average. In that case, GR… Read more »

I would agree that the term “heat wave” is very subjective. In the old days there was a term “cold wave” that term is not used anymore for some reason. But if the same reasoning of a day 10° or more below average was used then Grand Rapids would have had a 3 day “cold wave” in May and another 3 day “cold wave in June” I just think that some terms are over used and if one wants to call 3 or 4 days on hot weather a “heat wave” than one has to call it a “cold wave”… Read more »

Seems legit. 🙂

MV mentioned about power outages. Well they are no fun to say the least. The longest I have had was after the big derecho of 1998 when the power was out for over a week and another time after the ice storm of 1976 when the power was out for several days. Anyway I hope everyone who lost power soon has their power back on.

The overnight low both here and at the airport was 71. At this time it is clear and 73 here and the dew point is now down to 66.

Excellent graphic on the dew point MV. This week has no doubt been “oppressive” heat and humidity to deal with.

My post for tomorrow will deal with high dew points. I think the results might kind of surprised me.

TGIF! We’re heading to St. Joe tomorrow and hitting the beach for one final summer fun before school starts. 80 and sunny with the water temp (unless it turns over) of 75. It will be a perfect day!

Re: the link I provided yesterday showing the cars with water up to their windows, an article today on WLNS’ website says that area received 8″ of rainfall – which coincides with the last graphic above.

8″??? That’s twice as much rain that was received during the months of March, April, and May combined.
