Yesterday was a great day to be out and about. We went to Ten Ten in Kalamazoo with some of the kids and grand kids for dinner. They have a huge all you can eat buffet with various oriental foods to choose from. One of my granddaughters usually sits next to me during dinners and as usual I am the main source of entertainment. Along with all the great things I had on my plate were the rice wrapped fried eel, sushi and crawfish. She thought the crawfish were pretty gross, my grandson across the table thought they were cool. Luckily they have a kids menu with mac and cheese and pizza.
When I was a kid we used to play with the crawfish on my grandparents farm. They owned 80 acres west of Allegan and Dumont creek flowed through the middle of their property. The creek a lot of the little critters and we would catch them for entertainment then return them back to the creek.
Crayfish, also known as crawfish, crawdads, freshwater lobsters, mountain lobsters, mudbugs or yabbies, are freshwater crustaceans resembling small lobsters (to which they are related). Louisiana supplies 95% of the crayfish harvested in the US. In 1987, Louisiana produced 90% of the crayfish harvested in the world, 70% of which were consumed locally. In 2007, the Louisiana crawfish harvest was about 54,800 tons, almost all of it from aquaculture. Crawfish boils are popular in the deep south – they are boiled then dumped on the table where they are consumed. They don’t taste as good as lobster (they are pretty good though) and you have to eat a lot of them if that is all you are having for a meal.
On the menu today for the weather is wind with light rain this morning – maybe a few snowflakes mixing in north of Big Rapids. We will see lake enhance showers mainly along and west of 131 through the morning before they dry up by noon. It is currently 49° at 4:30am with light rain. We will stay in the 40s today, warming to the low 50s tomorrow. We have a couple chances of frost this week which will end the growing season for southwest Michigan

My cousin in Omaha got an inch and a half of snow yesterday. They had a high of 93 earlier this month.
42* degrees out at the YARDofBRICKS .. 28* degrees and snow falling in Ironwood that’s about winter criteria for October! INDYDOG14!!
It’s cold, as winter has arrived once again…
What an incredible cool trend!!!!!
No doubt! This past 5 days is just an incredible stretch compared to the minuscule 5 month stretch we just had.
A few facts to look forward to for the rest of the month. The current mean for October at GRR is now at 57.8° (+3.8°) that will be going down over the last half on the month. The average high/low as of today is 61/42 that will fall to 55/38 by the end of the month. The average first 32° for Grand Rapids is October 1st (note in the last 30 years the average date is October 6th) The latest first 32 date is October 28, 1920. The average first hard freeze (28°) is October 17th The latest first 28 or colder date is November 22, 2007. In the last 10 years the first hard freeze has not happened until November 5 times. So, while Grand Rapids should see a low of 32 or lower yet this month Grand Rapids may or may not see one of 28 or colder.

How is the predicted high for the day 45 when it has already hit 51??
That 50 or 51 will be the “official” high for today. But the temperatures are falling and it is now down to 43 here at my house that is a drop of 2° since I woke up. In the colder months you see that happen from time to time and it has already happened a few times this month already. Depending on the timing of cold fronts that may be a theme for this winter season.
