Cool & Wet Today

We will have a chilly start to the holiday weekend with a little light rain and temps struggling to reach the mid-50s.  We had .25 of an inch of rain overnight and early this morning – the temp is 40° at 6 am with some mist in the air.  We now have a total of 1.19 inches of rain for the month (still below normal) and 4.34 inches for the Met spring (this is for the Otsego area and is more than 6 inches below normal).

The heaviest rain will fall south of Kalamazoo with lighter amounts to the north.  The main feature today will be the cool fall-like temps and breezy conditions over the area.  Temps will slowly recover the rest of the weekend though it will be cool at night, campfires may be in order.

Forecast Discussion

- Cold, Wet, Windy Today

Stiff northeast flow from Canadian high pressure, along with
clouds and rain will make it feel even colder than the maximum
temperatures today in the upper 40s to lower 50s. The record low
maximums for May 28th may be attainable today. Even some wet snow
is possible early this morning on the high ground of Osceola
County. The current (06Z) obs have sfc temps in the 30s, although
dew points are currently above 32.

We will have to watch area of convective-looking elements on radar
currently across northern Illinois. There will be some very
marginal mid level instability which could yield a rumble of
thunder across the southern forecast area this morning. Chances
are low enough to leave out of the forecast for now.

- Sun returns but cooler than normal weekend

The low pulls away on Saturday with Canadian sfc high bringing
fair and cool weather through the weekend with slowly moderating
temperatures. Frost will be possible both tonight and Saturday
night with lows expected in the 30s both nights.

- Rain chances increase after Tuesday

Upper troughing evolves into a cut off low from mid to late week
with some return flow Gulf moisture feeding into the region. This
will bring the chance for some rain late Tuesday into Thursday
with the higher chances late in the period as the upper low
advances into the central Great Lakes.

The wind has died down and it actually bearable out. Still hard to believe it’s 30+ degrees cooler than three days ago. Heading to the lake to catch a bunch of pre-spawn bass. Hope everyone has a wonderful, relaxing weekend.

The poor weather today is not as bad as it would have been this past winter because everything is open now (the gym, dinner, bookstore, etc) so I don’t feel like I am stuck at home all day like this past winter. (Aside from the fact that I still work from home)

By the way, there are some indications next weekend may be quite warm. I don’t trust temperature outlooks beyond one week, but summer is definitely approaching regardless.

I recorded 0.34″ of rain yesterday and overnight. On the temperature side this spring has been one of ups and downs with several days with highs/lows in the top ten either on the warm side or the cold side. Yesterdays official high of 59 at Grand Rapids tied several other years for the 7th coldest maximum for any May 27th at Grand Rapids. For today the record coldest maximum is 52 set in 1965 with 53 set in 1947 and then 57 in 1896, 1902 and 1984. So today has a good chance of being yet another top ten. At… Read more »
